It was quite eye-opening. ” As part of their study, Levy and his colleagues also conducted similar experiments in the lead-up to the 2017 general election in the United Kingdom, which determined the next prime minister. In that case, people were more likely to use the pronoun “she” than “he” when referring to the next prime minister. Levy suggests that sociopolitical context may account for at least some of the differences seen between the U. and the U. K. They hypothesized that the strong possibility of a female president might override the implicit bias people have toward referring to the president as “he. ” “We wanted to use the 2016 electoral campaign as a natural experiment, to look at what kind of language people would produce or expect to hear as their expectations about who was likely to win the race changed, ” Levy says. Before beginning the study, he expected that peoples use of the pronoun “she” would go up or down based on their beliefs about who would win the election. He planned to explore how long would it take for changes in pronoun use to appear, and how much of a boost “she” usage would experience if a majority of people expected the next president to be a woman. However, such a boost never materialized, even though Clinton was expected to win the election. The researchers performed their experiment 12 times between June 2016 and January 2017, with a total of nearly 25, 000 participants from the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform. The study included three tasks, and each participant was asked to perform one of them. The first task was to predict the likelihood of three candidates winning the election — Clinton, Donald Trump, or Bernie Sanders. From those numbers, the researchers could estimate the percentage of people who believed the next president would be a woman. This number was higher than 50 percent during most of the period leading up to the election, and reached just over 60 percent right before the election. The next two tasks were based on common linguistics research methods — one to test peoples patterns of language production, and the other to test how the words they encounter affect their reading comprehension. To test language production, the researchers asked participants to complete a paragraph such as “The next U. president will be sworn into office in January 2017. After moving into the Oval Office, one of the first things that …. ” In this task, about 40 percent of the participants ended up using a pronoun in their text. Early in the study period, more than 25 percent of those participants used “he, ” fewer than 10 percent used “she, ” and around 50 percent used “they. ” As the election got closer, and Clintons victory seemed more likely, the percentage of “she” usage never went up, but usage of “they” climbed to about 60 percent. While these results indicate that the singular “they” has reached widespread acceptance as a de facto standard in contemporary English, they also suggest a strong persistent bias against using “she” in a context where the gender of the individual referred to is not yet known. “After Clinton won the primary, by late summer, most people thought that she would win. Certainly Democrats, and especially female Democrats, thought that Clinton would win. But even in these groups, people were very reluctant to use ‘she to refer to the next president. It was never the case that ‘she was preferred over ‘he, ” Levy says. For the third task, participants were asked to read a short passage about the next president. As the participants read the text on a screen, they had to press a button to reveal each word of the sentence. This setup allows the researchers to measure how quickly participants are reading. Surprise or difficulty in comprehension leads to longer reading times. In this case, the researchers found that when participants encountered the pronoun “she” in a sentence referring to the next president, it cost them about a third of a second in reading time — a seemingly short amount of time that is nevertheless known from sentence processing research to indicate a substantial disruption relative to ordinary reading — compared to sentences that used “he. ” This did not change over the course of the study. “For months, we were in a situation where large segments of the population strongly expected that a woman would win, yet those segments of the population actually didnt use the word ‘she to refer to the next president, and were surprised to encounter ‘she references to the next president, ” Levy says. Strong stereotypes The findings suggest that gender biases regarding the presidency are so deeply ingrained that they are extremely difficult to overcome even when people strongly believe that the next president will be a woman, Levy says. “It was surprising that the stereotype that the U. president is always a man would so strongly influence language, even in this case, which offered the best possible circumstances for particularized knowledge about an upcoming event to override the stereotypes, ” he says. “Perhaps its an association of different pronouns with positions of prestige and power, or its simply an overall reluctance to refer to people in a way that indicates theyre female if youre not sure. ” The U. component of the study was conducted in June 2017 (before the election) and July 2017 (after the election but before Theresa May had successfully formed a government. Before the election, the researchers found that “she” was used about 25 percent of the time, while “he” was used less than 5 percent of the time. However, reading times for sentences referring to the prime minister as “she” were no faster than than those for “he, ” suggesting that there was still some bias against “she” in comprehension relative to usage preferences, even in a country that already has a woman prime minister. The type of gender bias seen in this study appears to extend beyond previously seen stereotypes that are based on demographic patterns, Levy says. For example, people usually refer to nurses as “she, ” even if they dont know the nurses gender, and more than 80 percent of nurses in the U. are female. In an ongoing study, von der Malsburg, Poppels, Levy, and recent MIT graduate Veronica Boyce have found that even for professions that have fairly equal representation of men and women, such as baker, “she” pronouns are underused. “If you ask people how likely a baker is to be male or female, its about 50/50. Strange decision to release this just before Christmas, but is very absorbing. The relationship described is convincing and the emotions as the cancer theme develops, raw and realistic. A Hidden Life, written and directed by Terrence Malick is yet another marvelous gem in this unforgettable year in cinematic achievements. However, this statement wouldn't be fair for this particular movie, as its without a doubt one of the best in the 20 years of the 21st century. Malick is an extremely unique and visionary director, a deduction that can be quickly made even after watching only one of his pictures. I have seen only two, this and Tree of Life. Tree of life is also hailed by critics as one of the greatest achievements in this century, but that was not apparent to me when I watched it on my small laptop screen in 2012; So it must be mentioned that Malick's style is meditative and poetic, something that can feel like an extremely challenging yoga class, its slow, can be "boring" yet to some who adore it, can be the favorite training style. However, there are two specific differences that must be made regarding this particular picture. First, the story is more concise and focused. Few tangible characters in a limited life span with a particular story and very well specified impacts and messages; this (along with flawless performances and mesmerizing cinematography) made this 3 hours picture much more captivating, especially in comparison with the longest this year, the Irishman (yep, it was too long to me. Secondly, A Hidden Life is an important human story that by itself is a much-needed testament about the unsung heroes of history.
A Hidden life is an epic, its very hard to justly praise its alluring cinematography, genius editing, intimate storytelling, heavy monologues, and its impeccable performances. Much can be said and studied but will focus here (especially for personal attachments) to the story itself.
The film follows the life of an Austrian farmer that defiantly chose not to be forced to join the Nazi army during WWII. It follows the simple yet precious life that he had with his loving wife, his beautiful 3 little girls, their wheat fields, their barns and farms and cattle in the heaven-like Austrian countryside, their small warm house, and the cherished memories of their lives. Malick undeniably was intensely passionate about drawing the life that was. Yes, there were the hardships of the farmer's life, but (specifically the first act) didn't leave anything up its sleeves in portraying the warmness and the wholesomeness of this life. The clear cut contrast between the heavenly old days and horrors of what comes after is a dangerous tool if handled by immatures, as it can easily be drawn in a tedious and pretentious sea of melodrama. But in the hands of an experienced poet such as Terrence Malick, here, this contrast is nothing short of enchanting. This creates an extreme in the emotional, which highlights the endless sacrifices and their holiness; sacrifices that the farmer had to make so he can hold onto his humanity and identity.
The second act excruciatingly draws the evading Nazi Germany into this farmer's peaceful little village. Malick tells the stories of the physical and ideological occupation of Nazism. Soldiers wander within the village taking volunteers and ensuring their constant presence, and with that, the notions of national socialism start to make their ways into the minds of everyone surrounding the farmer. Malick goes the extra mile with his emotional realism in affirming that people didn't show embracement of Nazi ideology, but were chained with the fear of tyranny, which enslaved them and tore out their sanities. This act throws the farmer and his family in a sea of discrimination and evil that creates utter solitude stretching his adamant decision not to join the army to the extreme. He finally yields and intends to join as a medical asset to avoid participation in the killing, but one thing stands in his path, which is the imposed pledge of allegiance to Hitler, which he considers as the ultimate abandonment of what makes him free.
The third act, the most terrifying and torturing, acts as the utter darkness of life after the farmer's separation from his family. It follows the physical and physiological torment of imprisonment of the farmer as he was considered a "traitor" and the social isolation that surrounded the wife along with this act's more apparent hardships of the village life. This is the longest act in the film and has particular parts that absolutely broke me personally and brought me back to memories that actually should not be forgotten. As I was protesting against the Syrian regime, I was (as millions of Syrians) imprisoned. It was less than a month, during which some but not much affected me physically. However, two particular memories came back to me while watching the third act, one of the "ceremony of greeting" to the prison (which is basically to be severely hit and humiliated by tens of soldiers along your long slow path to your cell) especially when the movie used what can be described as virtual reality scene where the viewer was made to be the one who is receiving the punches and the kicks of the ruthless prison torturer. The second memory elevated this movie for me to a new level, which is of an imprisoned defected soldier who was bleeding after his long torture session, and his screams. In Syria, thousands of soldiers had defected the regime's army after it started shooting at demonstrators killing tens of thousands of them. These soldiers and their stories are not as documented or known as the other tragedies in my country, because the regime made it a quest to silently eliminate these cracks in its steely structure. The few known stories resemble the zenith of human bravery and goodness that can ever be imagined, and they are hidden from us. Thus, I finally understood the title of the movie, A Hidden life, not of the farmer's from his surroundings, but from the recorded history, and us.
A certain element that threw me off for a while was the messiah complex leitmotif. The movie focused for a while on the pure Christian spirituality of the farmer and his wife, but also highlighted the inevitable doubt that can wrap the heart and shake the beliefs even of the most devoted theists in such an environment. In my opinion that was an essential part of this emotional story, but what I am hesitant in embracing is that the farmer was portrayed by others (and maybe by Malick himself) as a parallel to Jesus's biblical story, which is undoubtedly the richest and the most emotional, and it might be justified in such a theme, but there is a certain addiction to it that I didn't appreciate, however, it remains as a small and easily negligible part of this magical picture.
A Hidden Life tells a story with an obvious end, but the little details are what matter because they enlighten the weight of the sacrifice on one hand, and attache it to the very meaning of humanity in the other. Malick is saying as we all should that this hidden life simply shouldn't be hidden, it should be known and celebrated and followed, it's a debt that must be repaid to those who endured it, and a promise that we need to keep to ourselves as a whole species. A hidden life is a true story, in particular with this farmer, and generally with millions of others throughout the human history of battles against tyranny, thus, Malick's picture is nothing short of one of the most important pieces of art, that must be sought and experienced by everyone.

Watch A Hidden life insurance. Very interesting, this is a reminder that not all Germans or Austrians were Nazis. I often considered Malick to be the American correspondent of Tarkovsky. Just a warning for those of you expecting a more "palatable" Malick film compared to his recent releases. this is not that. You have a little more story than his previous recent releases but it by no means traverses away from well-known niche of long, quiet spells with heavily edited sweeping shots and the ability to fit a 30 minute story into 3 hours. So, if you're expecting to finally give Malick another try because you were bored with his recent releases, this is not it. I know first screenings' reviews made it appear that this is a more palatable film but it really isn't. It's typical Malick; a meditation of sorts. I personally loved it and found it beautiful, but I also appreciate these kind of movies. I only write this review because I brought a friend with me who's not the biggest Malick film; he enjoys a different style of cinema, nothing against that. But he was in the belief this was a more digestible film with an exciting story arc, conclusion, message, etc. it's not. This is the perfect movie to ingest a muscle relaxer, a couple of glasses of red, and just consume what's presented in front of you.

Pinar Toprak was not gonna make it considering that this year has John Williams final Star Wars score ever, a Thomas Newman entry which might finally see him win an Oscar, King Kong Alexandre Desplat, and Randy Newman with the sweetest score of the year. The only one who I could have seen carry over from Blockbuster summer to awards is Bear McCreary for Godzilla: King of All Monsters. It's one of the best scores of the year and an absolute titanic work, but the Oscars only really gives score recognition to stuff from the end of the year pushing for awards and none to stuff that comes out earlier, which is fundamentally stupid. I imagine Joker might run away with it all anyway level 2 Love me some Bear. Matthias Schoenaerts was born on December 8, 1977 in Antwerp, Belgium. His mother, Dominique Wiche, was a costume designer, translator and French teacher, and his father was actor Julien Schoenaerts. Zvezda c4 8di parts. First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison.
In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language.
The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater.
As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other.
As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story.
The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't.
Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging.
Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.

"The Whistlers" is a fun Romanian neo-noir borrowing suspense tropes from James Cain, Robert Siodmak and Jules Dassin. The premise is a cop (no unreliable voice overs here) who had to learn the idiom of the whistling language for communicating with people living in interstitial spaces inside and outside of the law. Offbeat, at times hilarious in a deadpan way and rife with truly beautiful mise en scène, the film is a deconstructed tribute to this specific and particular film genre but operates outside of it. All the characters are vividly drawn, the supporting ones carry out the one-dimensionality of their roles with a certain lived-in freshness. The use of music was also very tasteful and deliberately operatic as counterpoint to the life-and-death situations, quirkily told. Corneliu Porumboiu seems to be having fun directing this story. it shows and I for one was swept by the story and storytelling.

The locations are stunning, the actors attractive and Feng — initially a comedy director, though hes branched out in recent years to historical epics like “Back to 1942” and dramas like 2017s record-breaking “Youth” — did not get where he is without learning a thing or two about playing an audiences responses. So while your rational mind is rebelling against its more shameless manipulations, your hands may well be scrabbling through your bag for tissues, napkins, store receipts, candy wrappers — anything to mop up a flood of saltwater tears so deep, its possible a whole pod of whales (a recurring motif) lives within it. It starts with a shellshocked Sui Dongfeng, aka Simon ( Huang Xuan, from Fengs “Youth”) moving soundlessly through his Auckland home trying to summon the ghost of his pretty wife, Yun Luo aka Jennifer ( Yang Caiyu, also from “Youth”. She does briefly appear, but after a chaste hug and a bit of tidying (misty though its view of fateful, soulmate-style love is, the film has a fairly retrograde idea of a womans role) and slips away again, leaving Simon bereft. And so he embarks on his very, very sentimental journey, though New Zealands picturesque North and South Islands, to revisit the places where they made such sweet memories, and to scatter her ashes. Although this modern-day journey is the films basic narrative, it is really just a framing device for a movie that, like Simon, lives in the past. And so the real tale is told in two gluttonous series of flashbacks of which, awkwardly, the first is set later in time, detailing the newlyweds moving to a small town called Clyde and opening a Chinese restaurant, while the second covers the couples meet-cute as young immigrants to Auckland from Beijing. These reminiscences are suspended in the amber romance of DP Zhao Xiaodings outrageously pretty photography, petted ceaselessly by Dong Gangs omnipresent, emotive score, and usually cued by someone happening into a slant of golden light, assuming a faraway look and saying, “I remember the very first time I met her…” If Dongs music spares us a harp glissando to transport us into the past, its almost the only trick in the old-school melodrama box it does not use. The most curious facet of “Only Cloud Knows” might just be its incuriosity. Despite an evident entrancement with the ribbons of roadways that trail through New Zealands rolling hills, and the cattle-dotted fields that surround the couples new home, there is very little here that approaches anything like commentary on the struggles or rewards of the Chinese expatriate lifestyle in New Zealand. Though we know they both grew up in Beijing, we never find out exactly why either moved away, much less why specifically to this far-flung land. In Clyde they make exactly one local friend, Melinda (Lydia Peckham) a sparky waitress with an adventurous spirit whose world travels occasionally give Jennifer a little sigh of envy. The rest of their time is spent making the restaurant a success, doing nice little things for each other and playing with their smart, scruffy, rescue dog, Blue. At this point, their oddly self-contained life is one of such picture-perfect tweeness that wed know tragedy — human and canine — awaited even if the lightly portentous minor-key piano accompaniment didnt basically skywrite that fact across the massive South Island heavens. Across this and the earlier time frame, in which Jennifer and Simon meet while both renting rooms from kindly widow Mrs Lin (Feng regular Fan Xu) the film traces their friction-free relationship with plodding fidelity. But though the story is loosely based on the real-life experience of one of Fengs close friends and collaborators — or maybe because of that — it feels ethereally divorced from reality. Jennifer, despite Yang Caiyus best efforts and unerring ability to locate the loveliest light to gaze sadly into, is a sliver of a character, whose air of haunted melancholy, and need for “protection” are frequently mooted, but never really explained, until the films unsatisfying coda. That final revelation is, however, delivered by the wonderful Zhao Shuzhen, so beware that just when you might have put away the tissues for good, the grandmother from “The Farewell” is going to show up to wring a few more out of you. Schematic and manipulative as it is, as a kind of team-effort between the New Zealand Tourist Board and whatever the Chinese equivalent of Hallmark is, “Only Cloud Knows” is, in the moment, undeniably effective at jerking tears. If it does anything like the numbers that Fengs films have done in the past, expect reports of mass dehydration. Harry, played by Billy Crystal, and Sally, played by Sally Kellerman, were both headstrong and willing to understand eachother. Even their best friends played by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby were a real match, so Harry and Sally had to learn the hard way. It took their best friends' marriage plus Harry's willingness to admit he really loved Sally. and so he proposed marriage on New Year's Eve. In other words, they were two of a kind. This was a cute fine wonderful love story and so very unpretensive; enjoyable! One of those "feel good" movies. It reminded me of "Sleeping in Seattle 1993. 7/10.
