“who tf are u” 😂😂. This movie is paired at being brilliant. the part that I noticed was his turning point for his life to take a 360 was when he was on his way to the girl house, if you pay close attention there was a man in a yellow sweater I think red scarf standing to the left near the street which represent caution to the unknown. The double lines in the street THIS TIME represent there was no turning back. Seeing his mother in the house look at him then seeing him self represent that he would relive his childhood in remembrance of what he had gone through but, he had too make a choice to live or die. But as always in the end GOD can only judge a man's heart so now he has to give back to the little girl and raise her amen 😪😔🌞.

The emergence of streaming media has caused the fall of many DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2019, an article from the New York Times published an article about Netflix DVD, No Manches Frida 2s. It was stated that Netflix was continuing their DVD No. No Frida 2s with 5. 3 million customers, which was a significant decrease from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming, No Manches Frida 2s, has 65 million members. In a March 2019 study that assessed “The Impact of movies of Streaming on Traditional DVD Movie Rentals” it was found that respondents did not buy DVD movies nearly as much, if ever, because streaming had taken over the market. So we get more space adventures, more original story material and more about what will make this 21st MCU movie different from the previous 20 MCU films. Watch Final Space Season 2 — Movie 6, viewers don’t consider the quality of movies to differ significantly between DVDs and online streaming. Problems that according to respondents need to be improved by streaming movies including fast forwarding or rewinding functions, and search functions. This article highlights that streaming quality movies as an industry will only increase in time, because advertising revenues continue to soar on an annual basis across industries, providing incentives for the production of quality content. He is someone we don’t see happening. Still, Brie Larson’s resume is impressive. The actress has been playing on TV and film sets since she was 11 years old. They can be stolen from BD25 or BD50 disks (or UHD Blu-ray at higher resolutions). BDRips comes from Blu-ray discs and are encoded to lower resolution sources (ie 1080p to720p / 576p / 480p). BRRip is a video that has been encoded at HD resolution (usually 1080p) which is then transcribed to SD resolution. Watch Run This Town The BD / BRRip Movie in DVDRip resolution looks better, however, because the encoding is from a higher quality source. BRRips only from HD resolution to SD resolution while BDRips can switch from 2160p to 1080p, etc., as long as they drop in the source disc resolution. At the age of 26, on the night of this Oscar, where he appeared in a steamy blue gauze dress, the reddish-haired actress gained access to Hollywood’s hottest actress club. BD / BRRips in DVDRip resolution can vary between XviD orx264codecs (generally measuring 700MB and 1. 5GB and the size of DVD5 or DVD9: 4. 5GB or 8. 4GB) which is larger, the size fluctuates depending on the length and quality of release, but increasingly the higher the size, the more likely they are to use the x264 codec. With its classic and secret beauty, this Californian from Sacramento has won the Summit. He was seen on “21 Jump Street” with Channing Tatum, and “Crazy Amy” by Judd Apatow. And against more prominent actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Gal Gadot or Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson signed a seven-contract deal with Marvel. There is nothing like that with Watch The Curse of La Llorona Free Online, which is signed mainly by women. And it feels. When he’s not in a combination of full-featured superheroes, Carol Danvers Run This Towns Nirvana as greedy anti-erotic as possible and proves to be very independent. This is even the key to his strength: if the super hero is so unique, we are told, it is thanks to his ability since Run This Town, despite being ridiculed masculine, to stand alone. Too bad it’s not enough to make a film that stands up completely … Errors in scenarios and realization are complicated and impossible to be inspired. There is no sequence of actions that are truly shocking and actress Brie Larson failed to make her character charming. Spending his time displaying scorn and ridicule, his courageous attitude continually weakens empathy and prevents the audience from shuddering at the danger and changes facing the hero. Too bad, because the tape offers very good things to the person including the red cat and young Nick Fury and both eyes (the film took place in the 1990s). In this case, if Samuel Jackson’s rejuvenation by digital technology is impressive, the illusion is only for his face. Once the actor moves or starts the sequence of actions, the stiffness of his movements is clear and reminds of his true age. Details but it shows that digital is fortunately still at a limit. As for Goose, the cat, we will not say more about his role not to “express”. Already the 21st film for stable Marvel Cinema was launched 10 years ago, and while waiting for the sequel to The 100 Season 6 Movie war infinity (The 100 Season 6 Movie, released April 24 home), this new work is a suitable drink but struggles to hold back for the body and to be really refreshing. Let’s hope that following the adventures of the strongest heroes, Marvel managed to increase levels and prove better. #123movies #putlocker #yesmovies #afdah #freemoviesonline #gostream #marvelmoviesinorder #m4ufree #movies123 #123moviesgo #123movies123 #xmovies8 #0123movies #watchmoviesonlinefree #goodmoviesonnetflix #watchmoviesonline #sockshare #moviestowatch #putlocker9 #goodmoviestowatch #watchfreemovies #123movieshub #dragonballsuperbrolyfullmovie #avengersmoviesinorder #bestmoviesonamazonprime #netflixtvshows #hulushows #scarymoviesonnetflix #freemoviewebsites #topnetflixmovies #freemoviestreaming #123freemovies #123movies #verystream #streammango #gostream #gomovies #vmovies #kissmovies #putlocker #openload #flixtor #vicloud #vidoza #popcorn #ymovies #movieninja #cmovies #azmovies #solarmovies #5movies #vxmovies.

Die farbe aus dem all amazon. Vivid, creepy, atmospheric, suspenseful, poetic, unsettling, spectacular and fresh. Basically I'd call this a fine line between mainstream and art, but mostly it's pure art, a visual masterpiece and a learning guide on how to write a good script and neatly edit your film.
I read the book prior and must note, they really added some nice twists to the source material. The acting was top-notch. The special make-up monster design was absolutely old-school and practical, but what I loved even more was Richard Stanley didn't exploit gore, neither overused the jumpscares here - just enough to convey the story - and the CGI was unbelievably well done, considering the budget. If like myself you enjoyed H. P. Lovecraft's story, you'll most likely love Richard Stanley's movie. I can only dream of sights that man can show us if he's given bigger projects and total freedom. Producers need to pay more attention to artists like him.

I swear I imagined that colour when I red the book. Die Farbe aus dem all inclusive. H.p. lovecraft die farbe aus dem all. Die farbe aus dem all trailer deutsch. I was really looking forward to seeing this, and had just finished reading the short story this movie was based on. This travesty of a film could have been so so SO much better. I had to laugh a few times at the poorly written script and horrendous acting by everyone on the movie.
There was probably 20 minutes left in the movie, but I couldn't take any more. The writing, editing and acting were plain awful. Nicholas Cage is a really bad actor, in almost every movie except Moonstruck and Raising Arizona. But I think this may be his worst.

Posted on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019 by Fresh off his rave reviews in Mandy, Nicolas Cage is joining forces with frequently foiled filmmaker Richard Stanley for an adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s The Colour Out of Space. One of Lovecraft’s most terrifying stories, The Colour Out of Space follows a surveyor trying to uncover the cause of mysterious events terrorizing a patch of land in the wilds of Massachusetts. We covered this at the end of last year, but the news was apparently premature at the time. Now it’s official: Mandy production company SpectreVision is re-teaming with Nicolas Cage for The Colour Out of Space, based on the short story by H. Lovecraft. Nicolas Cage starring in an H. Lovecraft adaptation is exciting enough on its own – but there’s more. The film will be helmed by none other than Richard Stanley, marking his return to feature filmmaking after a 20 year absence. Stanley was, at one point, a hot up-and-coming genre filmmaker, catching attention with his 1990 British sci-fi film Hardwire. Stanley was set to break into Hollywood with the 1996 adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau – but things went horribly wrong. The producers lost faith in Stanley’s vision, and also felt the filmmaker had lost control of the set. As a result, they fired Stanley, replacing him with John Frankenheimer. This event (which is chronicled in the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau) effectively sabotaged Stanley’s career, and while he’s directed several shorts and documentaries, he hasn’t helmed a feature film since. But now that’s apparently about to change with The Colour Out of Space. And that’s pretty damn exciting. In addition to Cage, the film will feature Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard and Q’Orianka Kilcher. Here’s the current synopsis for the feature adaptation: COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches…including them. Written in 1927, Lovecraft’s Colour has gone on to influence writers and filmmakers for years to come. You can see traces of Colour Out of Space in everything from Creepshow to the 2018 film Annihilation. In the story, an unnamed surveyor “attempts to uncover the secrets behind a shunned place referred to by the locals of Arkham as the ‘blasted heath. '” The narrator eventually learns that the region’s problems began when a meteorite crashed in the area, poisoning the land, deforming animals, and driving human beings insane. Like most Lovecraft stories, Colour deals with forces beyond human understanding or comprehension. The author wanted to create something truly alien – the type of alien life that the human mind can’t even begin to process. It’ll be interesting to see how such a story gets adapted to the screen by Stanley, a highly inventive filmmaker. Throwing Cage into the mix certainly makes this whole thing extra enticing. “Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years, ” said SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah. “Richard Stanley — a wizard in his own right — will at long last bring Lovecraft’s humbling power to the screen unfiltered. ” The Colour Out of Space can be read in full here. Plot [ edit] Sometime after the Enchantress ' defeat, [a] the Joker breaks up with Harley Quinn, throwing her out on the streets of Gotham City. She is taken in by Doc, the elderly owner of a Taiwanese restaurant, and recovers from her relationship by cutting her hair, adopting a spotted hyena (whom she names after Bruce Wayne), and taking up roller derby. One night, Harley gets drunk at a nightclub owned by gangster Roman Sionis, and cripples Roman's driver after he insults her. She then meets burlesque singer Dinah Lance, who later rescues an intoxicated Harley from an attempted abduction; that night, Harley blows up the Ace Chemicals plant where she pledged herself to the Joker years prior as a way to publicly announce their breakup. Spotting the scuffle from his bedroom, Roman is impressed by Dinah's skills and appoints her as his new driver. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective Renee Montoya investigates a series of mob killings carried out by a crossbow -wielding vigilante. Finding Harley's necklace at the scene of the Ace Chemicals explosion, Montoya notes that Harley is in danger without the Joker's protection. She approaches Dinah about being an informant on Roman for them, but Dinah rejects the offer. Roman sends Dinah and his sadistic right-hand-man Victor Zsasz to retrieve a diamond embedded with the account numbers to the fortune of the Bertinelli crime family, who were massacred years ago. Young pickpocket Cassandra "Cass" Cain steals the diamond from Zsasz, but swallows it after she is arrested. Harley, fleeing from Montoya and several other people she had wronged in the past, is captured by Roman's men. Zsasz informs Roman that Cassandra has the diamond, and Dinah warns Montoya about the situation. As Roman tortures Harley and prepares to have her killed, she offers to recover the diamond for him. Roman agrees but also places a bounty on Cass to shake up the competition. Breaking into the GCPD with a variety of firework -inspired non-lethal grenade launcher rounds, Harley frees Cassandra and the pair escape to the evidence warehouse. They are ambushed by a number of thugs, but manage to kill them all. After escaping from the evidence warehouse, Harley and Cassandra bond while hiding out at the former's apartment. Doc is approached for information by the "crossbow killer", who is revealed to be Helena Bertinelli. Having survived her family's massacre and becoming trained as an assassin, Helena has been targeting each of the gangsters responsible for her family's murders, preferring the moniker of "The Huntress". Quinn's apartment is later bombed by criminals looking for Cass, and Doc sorrowfully reveals that he betrayed Harley, selling them out for money. Harley calls Roman and offers to turn Cassandra over in exchange for his protection, agreeing to meet at an abandoned amusement park (mostly one of the Joker's former hideouts). Dinah notifies Montoya of the rendezvous, while Zsasz notices Dinah's treacherous text message en route to the park and informs Roman. Devastated by Dinah's betrayal, Roman dons his ritualistic mask from which he gets his villainous nickname, "Black Mask". At the park, Montoya confronts Harley, but Harley knocks her out of a window. Zsasz arrives and tranquilizes Harley before holding Dinah at gunpoint, but he is killed by Helena, who reveals Zsasz was the last of her family's killers. Montoya returns and a stand-off ensues, until they realize Roman has arrived with a small army of masked criminals, known collectively as the False Face Society. Using Quinn's old gear, the makeshift team successfully withstand and repel their attack. During the battle, Cass is captured by Roman, while Dinah reveals her metahuman ability of supersonic-level screaming, defeating an additional number of mobsters aligned with Roman. Harley gives chase on roller skates, and with assistance from Helena, the pair pursue Roman. At a nearby pier, the final confrontation occurs. Taking aim at a shadowy figure in the distance she believes to be Roman, Harley wastes her last bullet as Roman appears from behind the figure, which is revealed to be a statue. Roman holds Cassandra hostage and prepares to kill her. However, Cassandra pulls the ring from a grenade she had taken from Harley's weapons chest earlier, slipping the grenade in Roman's jacket. Harley throws Roman from the pier just before the grenade detonates and kills him. In the aftermath of destroying Roman's criminal empire, Montoya quits the GCPD. With the money within the accounts hidden inside the diamond, she joins Dinah and Helena in establishing a team of vigilantes – the Birds of Prey. Harley and Cassandra escape, selling the diamond itself to a pawnshop and starting their own contract killing business. In a post-credits audio sequence, Harley is about to reveal a secret about Batman, but the film ends mid-sentence. Cast [ edit] Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn: A former-certified psychiatrist, who became a crazed criminal and the Joker 's accomplice/girlfriend, and later a part of the Suicide Squad. She has since cut ties with the Joker after the pair broke up. [7] Screenwriter Christina Hodson sought to reinvent Harley, wanting to expand on the character following her departure from the Joker's company. [8] Hodson called Harley the character she enjoyed developing most due to her unpredictable personality. [9] Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli / The Huntress: A vigilante who is the orphaned daughter of gangster Franco Bertinelli. [10] [11] [12] Ella Mika portrays a young Helena, during flashback scenes. [13] Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Lance / Black Canary [10] [11] [14] A vigilante with the metahuman ability of hypersonic screams, which she inherited genetically from her mother. [15] [16] She is a singer in a club that Sionis owns. [17] Smollett-Bell described Dinah as "disenfranchised and disconnected from the world, " and someone who "doesn’t really want to have anything to do with crime fighting or being a good-doer, which is so against her nature because we know Dinah to be all heart. " The actress added she became a fan of Black Canary by playing with the character in the video game Injustice 2, [18] which also influenced how she physically portrayed the depiction of the hypersonic screams. [19] Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya: [20] [21] An alcoholic, cynical detective in the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD), who is building a case against Sionis. Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz: A deranged mob killer and henchman of Sionis who carves a tally mark on his skin for each victim he claims. [22] Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain: A young girl who has a contract placed upon her head by Sionis after she steals a valuable diamond from him. [20] [23] Ali Wong as Ellen Yee: Montoya's ex-girlfriend and a Gotham City district attorney. [22] [24] Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis / Black Mask: A brutal and iron-fisted crime lord who threatens Cassandra and Harley. [25] [26] McGregor described the character as "an absolute narcissist. " [27] Additionally, Steven Williams portrays Captain Patrick Erickson, Montoya's superior at the GCPD; Dana Lee portrays Doc, Quinn's friend who owns a Taiwanese restaurant; François Chau portrays Mr. Keo, a rival crime boss of Sionis; Derek Wilson portrays Tim Evans; Matt Willig portrays Happy; and Bojana Novakovic portrays Erika Manson, a night club patron who gets harassed by Sionis. Charlene Amoia and Paul Lasa respectively portray Maria and Franco Bertinelli, the mother and father of Helena; Robert Catrini portrays Stefano Galante, the mob boss who killed the Bertinelli family. [12] [28] The Joker appears in the film, through animated - special effects during a flashback sequence, as well as through the combined use of archive footage of Jared Leto from Suicide Squad and a body-double, Johnny Goth, on set. These techniques were used because Leto was not available during filming. [29] A still photograph of Jai Courtney as George "Digger" Harkness / Captain Boomerang also appears on a wall in the Gotham City Police Department. [30] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] In May 2016, ahead of the release of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. Pictures announced a spinoff film focusing on Harley Quinn and several other female DC Comics heroes and villains, such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie was attached to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and would also serve as producer. [7] [31] British screenwriter Christina Hodson was announced to be writing the film in November. [32] Robbie had pitched the film to Warner Bros. in 2015 as "an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends. ' Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. " Robbie felt it was important for the film to have a female director. While Warner Bros. and DC Films had various other Harley Quinn-oriented films in development, Birds of Prey was the only one with whose development Robbie was directly involved. [33] Robbie spent three years working on Birds of Prey and continued to present it to Warner Bros. until the studio felt the project was at the point it could be made. [33] By April 2018, Warner Bros. and DC Films had finalized a deal with Cathy Yan to direct, making her the first female Asian director to direct a superhero film. [34] Robbie was confirmed to be producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, as part of a first look deal she has with the studio; Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkless were also announced to serve as producers through their companies Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Clubhouse Pictures, respectively. Production was scheduled to begin by late 2018 or early 2019. [35] The Penguin was intended to appear in the script at one point, but was dropped to preserve his DC Extended Universe debut in The Batman. [36] Pre-production [ edit] By July 2018, the film was entering pre-production. [37] Robbie confirmed the film would be titled Birds of Prey, describing it as "different" from the other DC films featuring Harley Quinn, and said it would be produced on a relatively small budget compared to other superhero films. [38] [39] She also stated that Harley Quinn would receive a new costume, and teased the casting of diverse actors. [40] The line-up for the Birds of Prey team was revealed to include Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya, with the villain set to be a Batman adversary who had not yet been seen in film. [20] Casting began in August, [41] with Warner Bros. considering a number of actresses for Huntress and Black Canary. Alexandra Daddario, Jodie Comer, Blake Lively, and Vanessa Kirby expressed interest. [42] [43] In August, Roman Sionis / Black Mask was revealed to be the film's antagonist. [44] Janelle Monáe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jurnee Smollett-Bell were under consideration for Black Canary by September, while Sofia Boutella, Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti were being considered to play Huntress. [45] Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez tested for Renee Montoya, while Warner Bros. began seeking a 12-year-old Asian actress to play Cassandra Cain. [46] In late September, Smollett-Bell and Winstead were respectively cast as Black Canary and Huntress, [10] Warner Bros. scheduled a February 7, 2020 release date, [47] and Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley were under consideration for the role of Black Mask. [48] During the U. S. -China Entertainment Summit in October, Yan confirmed the cast and that the film would be R-rated. She said, "[I] could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable. " [49] Cinematographer Matthew Libatique joined the film that month, [50] as did Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. [21] Stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio and fight coordinator Jon Valera joined in November, [51] along with McGregor as Black Mask [25] and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. [23] Robbie revealed the full title, [52] and said that the subtitle reflects the humorous tone of the film. [53] Production designer K. K. Barrett joined in December, [54] as did Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. [22] Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, Robert Catrini, and Ali Wong were also cast. [22] [24] Filming [ edit] Principal photography began in Los Angeles, California in January 2019 under the working title Fox Force Five. [55] [56] [57] Although filming had been expected to also take place in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, [58] the entire shoot took place in Los Angeles after the production received a tax credit from the state of California. [59] Filming was expected to be completed by mid-April 2019. [60] In February, Charlene Amoia joined the cast. [12] Filming wrapped on April 15, 2019. [61] Post-production [ edit] Jay Cassidy and Evan Schiff served as editors, while Method Studios, Weta Digital, Luma Pictures, Image Engine and Crafty Apes provided the visual effects for the film. [62] [63] [64] [65] In August 2019, Chad Stahelski joined as a second unit director for reshoots. [66] Photography for the additional footage began on September 3, 2019. [67] Music [ edit] In September 2019, Daniel Pemberton was announced to serve as composer for the film's score. [68] The Original Motion Picture Score album was released by WaterTower Music on February 14. [69] A soundtrack album for the film, titled Birds of Prey: The Album, was announced in January 2020 and was released on February 7 by Atlantic Records, to coincides with the film's release. To promote the album, a single was released every Friday before the film's release. [70] " Diamonds " by Megan Thee Stallion and Normani was released on January 10, [71] "Joke's On You" by Charlotte Lawrence was released on January 17, [72] "Boss Bitch" by Doja Cat was released on January 24, "Sway with Me" by Saweetie and GALXARA was released on January 31 [73] and "Experiment On Me" by Halsey, was released on the album release day. [74] The movie also includes songs which are not featured on the album, such as Spiderbait 's " Black Betty ", which plays during the fight scene at the police impound, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ' " I Hate Myself For Loving You ", which plays during the montage of Harley trying to move on from the Joker, Heart 's " Barracuda ", which plays for the first part of the fight against the False Face Society, and Kesha 's " Woman ", which plays during the final scene. Marketing [ edit] Marketing began on January 21, 2019, when a first-look production video of the characters and costumes titled "See You Soon" was released by Warner Bros. via YouTube. [75] DC Comics published a promotional trade paperback anthology featuring stories based on the film on November 12, 2019. [76] The first teaser debuted exclusively in theatres on September 5, 2019, in front of screenings for It: Chapter Two, with Quinn stating that she is "over clowns" while popping a red balloon, in a collective reference to It / Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the Joker. [77] A short teaser was released on the film's social media pages, announcing the first official trailer would be released on October 1, 2019. A series of posters, which also announced the trailer debut, was released the same day. [78] On December 5, 2019, Birds of Prey held a panel at the annual CCXP in Brazil, showing the first five minutes of the film, and the second official trailer, which was released online on January 9, 2020. A three-day pop-up event named Harleywood was also organized at the Hollywood and Highland Center with the presence of the cast on the launch day. Artists who contributed to the soundtrack were also present to promote it, with Charlotte Lawrence and Doja Cat performing. [79] Release [ edit] Birds of Prey was theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on February 7, 2020 in standard, IMAX, IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and ScreenX formats. [47] [80] [81] The film had its world premiere on January 25, 2020 at the Proyecto Publico Prim in Mexico City. [82] It also screened at the BFI IMAX in London on January 29, and at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on January 30, during a special event named Le Festival de Quinn ( The Quinn's Festival) in reference to the Cannes Film Festival. [83] [84] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of March 8, 2020, Birds of Prey has grossed $82. 6 million in the United States and Canada, and $113. 2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $195. 8 million. [3] [4] According to Variety, it is estimated that the film will need to gross $250–300 million worldwide in order to break even. [2] In the United States and Canada, Birds of Prey was initially projected to gross $50–55 million from 4, 236 theaters in its opening weekend. [85] However, after making $13 million in its first day, including $4 million from Thursday night previews, estimates were lowered and it went on to debut to $33 million. The film finished first at the box office but marked the lowest opening for a DC film since Jonah Hex in 2010 ($5. 3 million), and was 75% smaller than Suicide Squad ' s $133. 4 million opening in 2016. The low start was blamed on the possible lack of demand for a solo film surrounding the character of Harley Quinn, as well as the R rating limiting the appeal and demographics for ticket sales. [86] On February 10, 2020, it was reported that the film was being displayed under the title Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey on the websites for AMC Theatres, Cinemark Theatres, and Regal Cinemas. [5] [6] According to Screen Rant, the name change was mandated by Warner Bros. [5] [87] However, TheWrap subsequently reported that "an individual with knowledge at the studio" denied that Warner Bros. had revised the title, and quoted Atom Tickets ' Alisha Grauso's explanation that the new listing was "apparently for display/search purposes only for vendors and theaters, not an official title change. " [88] In its second weekend the film fell 48% to $17. 1 million, finishing second, behind newcomer Sonic the Hedgehog, and then made $7 million in its third, dropping another 59%. [89] [90] [91] In other territories, the film was expected to debut to $60–70 million from 76 countries, for a worldwide total of $110–125 million. [85] It made $7. 8 million after two days of overseas release in 51 countries and $18. 1 million from the full 76 after three. The film went on to make $46 million from international play in its opening weekend, and $79 million worldwide. Its highest-grossing territories were Mexico ($4. 6 million), Russia ($4 million), the United Kingdom ($3. 9 million), Brazil ($2. 8 million) and France ($2. 7 million). The low opening was blamed on similar audience hesitation as in the United States, as well as the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Asia closing some theaters. [92] Critical response [ edit] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 78% based on 375 reviews, with an average rating of 6. 73/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "With a fresh perspective, some new friends, and loads of fast-paced action, Birds of Prey captures the colorfully anarchic spirit of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. " [93] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 60 out of 100, based on 59 critic reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews. " [94] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, and PostTrak reported it received an average 3. 5 out of 5 stars, with 61% of people surveyed saying they would definitely recommend it. [86] [89] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3. 5 out of 4 stars, and said that "Robbie turns in a much richer and funnier and layered performance as Harley this time around, thanks in large part to the stiletto-sharp screenplay by Christina Hodson. " [95] Joe Morgenstern, writing for The Wall Street Journal, stated, "Much of this R-rated movie is chaotic, yet it’s a richly hued, madly inventive, gleefully violent and happily slapdash contraption with a formidable female at its center. " [96] Matthew Monagle of The Austin Chronicle gave it 4 out of 5 stars, and said that "Yan and Robbie lean into both sides of Quinn’s personality throughout the film. This allows Birds of Prey to earn every bit of its R-rating while still feeling like a Looney Tunes cartoon. " [97] The Arizona Republic ' s Nicole Ludden praised Yan's direction, saying that it "carries a visually distinct style throughout the film that makes the layering of several chaotic scenes feel cohesive. " [98] John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter called the film "action-packed, but more rule-following than its bonkers protagonist, " and wrote, "Yan finds plenty of opportunities for exciting set pieces: Extravagant action choreography makes the most of colorful set design, unlikely gimmicks and wrasslin'-style brutality. But Hodson's script offers far less diverting banter than it might've between the fight scenes. " [99] Writing for Variety, Owen Gleiberman said the film was "thin but lively" and praised the animated performances of Robbie and McGregor, as well as Yan's direction, although noted the script as having "attitude to spare, but in a rather bare-bones way. " [100] Calling it "DC's first good action movie, " Joshua Rivera of The Verge offered a mixed review while praising the film's relation to breakups, writing, "That manic energy is all that’s holding Birds of Prey together at times, and the fact that all of its characters seem to thrive in it makes it all the more disappointing that the movie doesn’t really take any time to get to know them better. " [101] In a scathing review, Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote " Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is more than horrible. It should not exist. Money should never have been raised for it. The screenplay should never have been filmed. Margot Robbie shouldn't have produced it. She certainly shouldn't have starred in it. Ahhh its gonna be amazing. I am so excited to see a story told through Harley Quinns eyes. Bring it DC! Thinking outside of the box <3. The DCEU is making its boldest move yet with Harley Quinn's Birds of Prey movie. Instead of getting her own solo film, the Suicide Squad standout is returning with a new badass squad. The Birds of Prey are definitely a famous comic book team, but they aren't nearly as recognizable as the Justice League or The Bat Family. With that in mind, we have compiled a handy guide to help get you up to speed on the basics of Birds of Prey before the movie comes out in 2020. Let's start with the big trailer: She's Harley frickin' Quinn! But let's focus... What Is The Official Birds Of Prey Movie Title? Margot Robbie, a. k. a. Harley Quinn, revealed in an Instagram photo that the full title of the movie is Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). It is a mouthful! Harley co-creator Paul Dini said he loves the title, and the photo Robbie posted of the script, calling it "classic Quinnsanity" for a character who often scribbles "wacky thoughts" all over things like her therapist's pad. The title also works as a tongue-in-cheek riff off the movie Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Bird humor never gets old! What Is The Birds Of Prey Release Date? Birds of Prey is currently scheduled for release on February 7, 2020. It follows DCEU movie releases Aquaman (December 21, 2018) and Shazam! (April 5, 2019) and precedes Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5, 2020). Birds of Prey was previously set to open on Valentine's Day 2020, but it was moved back one week, so it wouldn't conflict with Bond 25, which was opening that February 14 but moved itself to April 2020 anyway. What Is The Birds Of Prey Rating? Birds of Prey is currently confirmed to be rated R. That's in line with what Margot Robbie wanted when she pitched the idea of "an R-rated girl gang film. " She wanted her Harley Quinn to be part of it, but not have it be a solo film. If this R rating holds, it will be the DCEU's first R-rated release. Robbie's Harley first appeared in Suicide Squad, but that film had the usual PG-13 rating for DCEU films. This will be an edgy departure, following the successes of other R-rated comic book films like Fox's Deadpool and Logan. When Did Birds Of Prey Start Filming? Birds of Prey reportedly started filming in January 2019 in Los Angeles, under the working title Fox Force Five, and ended filming in April 2019. The working title intel came from Production Weekly (via Pursue News), and Pulp Fiction fans should recognize it. It's the name of the TV show Pulp character Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) was working on, following an all-female team of secret agents. So between Birdman and Pulp Fiction, Birds of Prey is already off to an early start with sly pop culture references. The script for Birds of Prey was written by Christina Hodson and the film is being directed by relative newcomer, Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan. She's only the second woman to direct a film for the DCEU, after Wonder Woman 's Patty Jenkins. She's also the first Asian woman to ever direct a superhero movie. What Is The Plot Of Birds Of Prey? Warner Bros. has yet to release an official synopsis for Birds of Prey, but here's what the film is reportedly about: Harley Quinn is said to bring this girl gang together, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Black Canary, and Rosie Perez's Detective Renee Montoya protecting Ella Jay Basco's Cassandra Cain after she comes across a diamond belonging to crime boss Roman Sionis, a. Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor. In DC Comics, the Birds of Prey lineup has expanded over the years, but the covert ops and crimefighting team is usually anchored by Batgirl/Oracle (aka Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance), and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). Harleen Quinzel a. Harley Quinn - Margot Robbie Margot Robbie was a scene-stealer in Suicide Squad, and her Harley returns to lead this semi-spinoff. Before she met and fell in love with the Joker, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was a psychiatrist assigned to Arkham Asylum. The DC Comics villain was voiced by Arleen Sorkin in Batman: The Animated Series, and played by Mia Sara in The WB's 2002 Birds of Prey TV series. The DCEU is reportedly still working on David Ayer's Gotham City Sirens movie, with Robbie's Harley Quinn returning and working with Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy. But first, Harley is working with more traditionally heroic crime fighters, the Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie's star has only risen since Suicide Squad was released in 2016. In the past two years, she has landed a series of high profile projects -- including Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots and Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She also picked up her first Oscar nomination for I, Tonya, which she also produced. She's the perfect choice to lead her own film, but it says a lot about her collaborative spirit that she preferred this film to be an ensemble rather than a Harley spinoff. Dinah Laurel Lance a. a Black Canary - Jurnee Smollett-Bell Jurnee Smollett-Bell was cast as crime fighter Black Canary. The CW's Arrow -verse recently brought the Black Canary mythology into the mainstream with the character played by played by Katie Cassidy. Dinah Lance, a. a Black Canary, is one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the entire DC universe, and her abilities are further bolstered by her sonic "Canary Cry" power, which can shatter glass and burst eardrums. The prospect of Black Canary making an appearance in a Birds of Prey movie is exciting on its own, but also because it also lays possible groundwork for the DCEU to introduce her mentor, Wildcat, as well as her longtime boyfriend, Green Arrow. Smollett-Bell broke out as young Eve in the 1997 film Eve's Bayou, and had a lead role in Denzel Washington's 2007 film The Great Debaters. She followed that with series regular roles as Jess Merriweather on Friday Night Lights and Nicole Wright in True Blood. This superhero film will be a departure for her, but it should also be a great showcase. Helena Bertinelli a. a Huntress - Mary Elizabeth Winstead Mary Elizabeth Winstead will play Huntress, who has had several iterations in the DC world. According to Variety, Birds of Prey will show her as a former mafia princess who was devastated at a young age when her family was killed in a mob hit. That turns her into a vigilante, and ultimately leads her to join the Birds of Prey team. Typically operating out of Gotham City (and often considered an honorary member of The Bat Family), Huntress has become known for her generally violent tactics, as well as her trademark use of a crossbow as her primary weapon. Most non-comic book readers will likely remember the villainous portrayal of the character during the first two seasons of The CW's Arrow. Although she is not an original member of the Birds of Prey organization, she has become inextricable from the team, and generally considered one of its most recognizable members. Winstead will reunite with her Fargo Season 3 co-star Ewan McGregor in Birds of Prey. She was a standout in 10 Cloverfield Lane, and already has comic book adaptation experience from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which helps get us excited to see her wield a crossbow as Huntress. Detective Renee Montoya - Rosie Perez Fearless Oscar nominee Rosie Perez has been cast as Gotham City Police Department Detective Renee Montoya. Renee Montoya was created for Batman: The Animated Series and returned for The New Batman Adventures. She has previously been depicted in Gotham, Batman: Bad Blood and Batman: The Telltale Series. In the comics, Renee is also one of the DC universe's most prominent gay characters. At one point in the comics, she became The Question, following her mentor Vic Sage. It's not clear yet if Birds of Prey will include The Question aspect of Renee Montoya's story or if she'll stick to being a police detective. But, since Rosie Perez was interested enough to take the role, hopefully that means they gave her character a lot of good material. Cassandra Cain a. Batgirl - Ella Jay Basco Young Ella Jay Basco will make her film debut as Cassandra Cain. In the comics, Cassandra is a teenager/young adult, but in Birds of Prey the half-Asian Cassandra will be a child. Cassandra Cain was introduced in the comics as the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. The child prodigy was raised to become a skilled martial artist and assassin. Weirdly enough, Cassandra was taught not to speak; instead, the parts of her brain normally used for speech were trained to read other people's movements and body language. She ultimately became one of Barbara Gordon/Oracle's field agents. Cassandra is one of several characters who have assumed the role of Batgirl. In the comics, Cassandra also goes by the name Orphan. This will be a breakout role for Ella Jay Basco, whose first credit was as 3-year-old Evelyn Yu in the "Perfect Storm" episode of Grey's Anatomy back in 2013. Since then, she's only had a few TV series roles, and this will be her first movie. What a way to make a debut! Roman Sionis a. Black Mask - Ewan McGregor Ewan McGregor will be playing Birds of Prey 's villain, Black Mask, Deadline confirmed. His Roman Sionis is a mob boss who leads the False Facers gang. Roman came from a rich family, and his parents cared more about that wealth than him. They'd drag him to parties and force him to be friends with other rich young Gothamites like Bruce Wayne. Roman hated his parents' fakeness -- their masks. When they died in a suspicious fire he inherited the Janus Cosmetics Corporation but drove it into the ground, leaving the door open for a Wayne Industries buyout. So, Roman came to hate Bruce Wayne. He carved a mask from his father's black coffin, hence the name, and eventually became one of Gotham's most ruthless crime lords. This won't be the first time Ewan McGregor plays a villain, or joins a blockbuster franchise, but he did play Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, so it's definitely a departure. Some of us still know the Scottish actor best from Trainspotting and singing in Mouin Rouge! He took a rare trip to TV to join fellow Birds of Prey star Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Fargo Season 3, and right before this movie opens he'll play grown-up Danny Torrance in Doctor Sleep. We're definitely looking forward to seeing what McGregor brings to the dark role of Black Mask. Victor Zsasz - Chris Messina The most recent addition to the Birds of Prey cast is actor Chris Messina as villain Victor Zsasz. In the comic, Victor is a self-mutilating serial killer. For every life he takes, he carves a mark on his body. Since his entire body is covered in cuts, you can see how many lives he's taken. Victor was once a successful business man in Gotham, but he gambled everything and lost to The Penguin. Victor was about to jump off a bridge when he was attacked by a homeless man. (Only in Gotham can you be attacked mid-suicide. ) Victor murdered the homeless man in self-defense, and that inspired him to kill as many people as possible. Chris Messina is one of those actors who seems to have been in everything, from Six Feet Under and The Mindy Project to Vicky Christina Barcelona and Away We Go. This is definitely a new direction for him, and it further illustrates the bold choices being made for this DC film. Other Confirmed Actors Two other actors have been confirmed to be a part of Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) at this point, but we don't know much about either of the characters they'll be playing. Comedian Ali Wong, who's best known for her two Netflix specials ( Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife) and her work on ABC's American Housewife, has been tapped to play someone working alongside Renee Montoya in Gotham law enforcement. We don't know right now if this means she's another cop or someone else working for the GCPD, or if she's a lawyer, but it should be fun to watch Wong bring her manic energy to the film either way. Actor Robert Catrini has also been added to the film, but his role is being kept super mysterious for now. Catrini is a character actor with over 100 film and TV credits dating back to 1995, and has appeared in shows such as Law & Order, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ally McBeal, General Hospital, 24, Criminal Minds, True Blood and Homeland. Other Birds Of Prey Characters Who Could Appear So far, Birds of Prey has yet to cast Barbara Gordon, and it's possible they will leave the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon behind. But, we'll see. Plenty of other characters have rotated through the Birds of Prey roster over the years. Potential additions to the cast include, but are certainly not limited to, Katana, Hawkgirl, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy -- although major roles for Poison Ivy and Catwoman may be saved for Gotham City Sirens, if that ever gets off the ground. It's also worth noting that the Birds of Prey team lineup is not inherently exclusive to women; male heroes like Nightwing and Blue Beetle have taken up honorary positions among the roster at various points throughout their publication history. How Does Harley Quinn Relate To The Birds Of Prey? Given the fact that the Birds of Prey often operate out of Gotham City, they have come into conflict with Harley Quinn numerous times over the course of their publication history. It's not clear yet how Birds of Prey will connect Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn to the heroines, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead said the movie is sort of a Suicide Squad spinoff, with Harley bringing the girl gang together. The Birds of Prey have worked with villains in the past, and Harley Quinn has definitely proven herself willing to cooperate with others when it benefits her. How Does Birds Of Prey Connect To The DCEU? Birds of Prey will be the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe, following Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, and Shazam! Birds of Prey will be released nearly a year after Shazam! 's April 5, 2019 opening, but -- as of this moment -- just four months before Wonder Woman 1984 arrives on June 5, 2020. We'll have to see if Birds of Prey includes a connection to the Wonder Woman sequel. Wonder Woman 1984 started filming well before Birds of Prey, and it was originally scheduled to open toward the end of 2019, before Birds of Prey 's current release. Now that the dates have been switched, Birds of Prey may include some kind of segue into the next chapter of Wonder Woman's story -- even if that story is another prequel, this time set in the 1980s.

Saw this movie yesterday it was fuckinf amazing

My favorite part of the trailer is Magik! Shes going to be bad ass I already know 🤷🏻‍♂️ Especially the part where she manifests her sword! My second favorite part is the actual release date of April because weve been waiting for forever lol. The New Mutants, which was initially supposed to hit theaters two years ago, was delayed again due to COVID-19. Will it ever see the light of day? The New Mutants has been delayed once again, a situation that has become all-too-familiar for the film over the last couple years. The most recent delay comes courtesy of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has shaken up the global entertainment industry. Centering on a group of young teenage mutants, the Josh Boone-directed Marvel horror film was expected to finally be released on April 3. However, it has since been postponed indefinitely. While the timing is coincidental, after the many time the movie has been pushed back for both common and uncommon reasons, fans might be starting to wonder if The New Mutants is cursed. Continue scrolling to keep reading Click the button below to start this article in quick view. EARLY DELAYS The first delay of The New Mutants came in February 2018 shortly before its original April release date. Fox, which was still an independent studio at the time, moved Deadpool 2 up a month from its originally scheduled June release to May; and in a decision to avoid competing with another Fox-Marvel property, Fox pushed The New Mutants back a whole 10 months to February 2019. The film was then pushed back another six months to August 2019. However, by March 2019, Fox's merger with Disney was complete, which brought a whole new set of problems. DISNEY ACQUISITION Once Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, including the X-Men and other Fox-owned Marvel properties, The New Mutants was in limbo. Disney is the home of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and under Fox, the X-Men films, including The New Mutants, had no connection to the franchise. After the acquisition, however, Disney made it clear it had plans to include the X-Men and other mutant characters in the MCU at some point. This left fans to wonder if The New Mutants would ever see the light of day, especially when Disney was initially reported to have been 'unimpressed' with the film and doubtful of its success upon release. Plus, Dark Phoenix, another Fox-Marvel film that was also delayed and released post-Disney merger, was critically panned and flopped at the box office. This surely did not look like a good sign for The New Mutants, Fox-Marvel's final unreleased film. RESHOOTS? Many believed that the film's frequent delays were the result of extensive reshoots, but in a recent interview, director Josh Boone claimed no reshoots were done and pointed to the Disney-Fox merger as the reason. "If there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups, " Boone said. "We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older. " The New Mutants originally wrapped filming in September 2017, and since most of the main cast was fairly young, post-2019 reshoots were a challenge because the actors looked different than they did during principal photography. Reshoots are not necessarily an indication of whether a film is good or bad, and are quite common for most movies, especially big franchise films. As a result, it might not bode well for The New Mutants if it was not able to do reshoots, as that might have been an opportunity to improve the film's quality. On the other hand, the film's stars have recently praised the final cut that was set to release in theaters, but since no one else has seen the movie, it's hard to get a realistic idea of its overall quality. At the moment, the future does not look as bright for The New Mutants as it did even a week ago. The film is likely to hit the big screen eventually, but interest could wane by then. Disney was putting a great deal of marketing muscle behind the movie before its postponement, but that momentum could now be stalled. In addition, as we get further away from Fox's X-Men series and closer to the time mutant characters may be introduced into the MCU, fans are likely to turn their attention to the X-Men that are expected to join the franchise in Phase 4 and beyond, possibly making The New Mutants feel like a relic of a bygone era. In order to salvage the film, Disney might consider releasing it on its Disney+ streaming service, or if its quasi-horror content is too intense, Hulu, instead of moving forward with a theatrical release. At this point, just getting The New Mutants in front of audiences would be a victory. Directed and co-written by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. They have been the main characters of three successive comic book series, which were spin-offs of the X-Men franchise. The first team of New Mutants characters was created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared in The New Mutants (September 1982), part of the line Marvel Graphic Novel, and are subsequently featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991. Like its parent title, The New Mutants highlighted interpersonal and group conflict as well as action and adventure, and featured a large ensemble cast. With the end of the first series, the characters were relaunched as X-Force in a new, eponymous series. The second New Mutants series, launched in 2003, featured a new group of teenage mutants. Unlike the original New Mutants, they were part of a huge cast of students at the Xavier Institute. In 2004, it was relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, after which the central group was formally dubbed the "New Mutants. " In the aftermath of the " M-Day " crossover storyline in late 2005, the remaining students were merged into one junior team, the New X-Men. The third New Mutants series, reuniting most of the original team, was launched in May 2009. A film featuring the New Mutants is scheduled to be released in April 2020. [1] The New Mutants, volume 1 [ edit] By the early 1980s, Uncanny X-Men (under the authorship of Chris Claremont) had become one of the comic book industry's most successful titles, prompting Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter to launch The New Mutants, the first of several X-Men spin-offs. X-Men editor Louise Simonson recalled "Neither Chris [Claremont] or I really wanted to do it. We wanted X-Men to be special and by itself, but Shooter told us that if we didn't come up with a new 'mutant' book, someone else would. " [2] The name was a modification of Stan Lee 's original name for the X-Men, "The Mutants". [2] The New Mutants were teenaged students of Professor Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and wore matching uniforms, much like the original X-Men, who had since grown into adulthood. [3] These students, however, rather resembled the "all-new, all-different X-Men" of their era in terms of ethnic diversity. The original team consisted of: Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie), a 16-year-old from Kentucky, United States and eventual co-leader, with the ability to generate thermo-chemical energy and propel himself through the air. Karma (Xi'an Coy Manh), a 19-year-old girl from Vietnam and the team's original leader, who could mentally possess other people's bodies. Mirage (Danielle Moonstar, originally codenamed Psyche), a girl who is a Cheyenne Native American and eventual co-leader after Karma's apparent death, who could create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions. Sunspot (Roberto da Costa), a 14-year-old from Brazil who had superhuman strength fueled by sunlight and could store solar energy in his body to use his super strength during the night. Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair), a 13-year-old religious girl from Scotland, United Kingdom who could transform into a wolf and a werewolf -like creature. The team was intended to debut in their own series. However, as the first issue was nearing completion, Shooter ordered it to be reworked into a graphic novel so that Marvel Graphic Novel could make its deadline for the next issue. Thus, the New Mutants debuted in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (December 1982), which continued a plotline from Uncanny X-Men. (Despite this, the graphic novel missed its shipping slot by two weeks due to artist Bob McLeod 's honeymoon. ) [2] The series was originally written by Claremont and illustrated by McLeod, the team's co-creators, but McLeod soon passed artistic duties on to Sal Buscema. McLeod was unprepared for the demands of doing both pencils and inks on a monthly book, prompting him to have Buscema do the breakdowns after the first three issues, and left entirely after issue #8 when he began to lose interest in the stories. [3] Claremont gave the series a darker tone, which was heightened with the arrival of artist Bill Sienkiewicz. Sienkiewicz's avant garde art style and painted covers broke through the conventional comic book boundaries of the day and helped The New Mutants stand out on the shelf. [3] In addition to very serious depictions of teenage angst and growing pains, the series featured themes of mysticism. The stories also relied on wilder, more far-fetched premises than were typical of X-Men at the time, shaping into more of a science fiction and fantasy series than the superhero coming-of-age comic it had been touted as in its early days. [3] Locales included demonic dimensions, alternate futures, and an ancient Roman civilization hidden within the Amazon rainforest. The New Mutants also encountered a secret society called the Hellfire Club, and began a rivalry with their young apprentices, the Hellions. After the apparent death of Karma, Cannonball and Dani Moonstar act as co-leaders. [4] New recruits included: Cypher (Douglas Ramsey), an otherwise ordinary young man who could learn to read or speak any language rapidly, whether it was human, alien, or machine, making him an unmatched computer expert. Magik (Illyana Rasputin), sister of the Russian X-Man Colossus and long-time resident of the X-Mansion, an accomplished mystic who could open "teleportation discs" allowing travel to Limbo and from there, any point on Earth. Magma (Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla), a fiercely tempered native of a secret Roman society in the Amazon who can control lava. [3] Warlock, an extraterrestrial of the techno-organic race known as the Technarchy. Considered a pariah due to the uncommon trait of empathy. A supplementary New Mutants Annual series began in 1984. These annuals were always written by whoever was the regular New Mutants writer at the time and often included significant changes to the status quo which were not explained in the parent series, so that readers would have to buy New Mutants Annual in order to follow events in both series. The 1985 annual was solicited as New Mutants Annual #2, but published as New Mutants Special Edition #1 because it exceeded the maximum page count for an annual. [5] In 1986, Professor X was written out of the series. Before he left, he made the X-Men's one-time nemesis, Magneto, headmaster of his school. [6] Magneto would be the team's longest-running headmaster, holding the position from New Mutants #35 through to #75. Fiercely overprotective of his students, particularly after the events of the " Mutant Massacre " and " Fall of the Mutants ", he was increasingly used as an uptight foil for the adventurous New Mutants, setting rules that they would inevitably break in the interests of helping their friends. With Claremont taking on Wolverine and Excalibur, he left The New Mutants and the series was turned over to writer Louise Simonson and illustrator Bret Blevins with issue #55 (Sept. 1987). Simonson was intended to be only a fill-in writer for the six months Claremont needed to get the two new series launched, but he ultimately remained with his new projects, and Simonson ended up writing the series for over three years. [2] During her run, Magma is written out of the book, [7] and Magik is de-aged back to childhood. [8] Due to his unpopularity with New Mutants readers and artists, Cypher is killed off in The New Mutants #60 (February 1988). Simonson recalled, "He wasn't fun to draw. He just stood around and hid behind a tree during a fight... Every artist who ever did him said 'Can't we kill this guy? ' We would get letters from fans about how much they hated him. " [2] Simonson also folded the X-Terminators, a group of young wards from X-Factor, into the New Mutants. [9] The X-Terminators added to the team were: Boom-Boom (Tabitha Smith), a teen runaway who could create "plasma bombs. " Rusty Collins, a pyrokinetic wanted by the U. S. government. Rictor (Julio Richter), a young Mexican who could create shock waves. Skids (Sally Blevins), a former Morlock who could project a frictionless force field around her body. In 1989, Simonson crafted a saga in which the team journeyed to Asgard, the home of the gods of Norse mythology. The storyline wrote Dani Moonstar out of the series, as she joined the Norse pantheon as one of the Valkyrior. [10] However, the most controversial issue of her run was New Mutants #64. Titled "Instant Replay! ", the story deals with the New Mutants' mourning for Cypher, and includes a scene in which Warlock attempts to resurrect Cypher by taking his corpse out of its coffin and showing it to Cypher's loved ones. Simonson holds it to be her favorite New Mutants story, though she acknowledges that many readers found it too morbid. [2] Sales of the series had slumped for several years, but took a sharp upturn after Rob Liefeld took over the penciling and co-plotting chores at the end of 1989. [ citation needed] A new mentor for the group, the mysterious mercenary Cable, was introduced, [10] further helping sales. Over the next year, several longtime team members were written out or killed off. However, the relationship between Liefeld and Simonson was fraught with tension, and Simonson claims that editor Bob Harras dealt with the situation by rewriting her plots and dialogue so that the characterizations did not make sense: "Although I wasn't being fired, I think I was being shoved out the door with both hands by Bob Harras. Bob was only doing what he had to do, I expect, which was make Rob Liefeld happy. " [2] Simonson eventually gave in, leaving after issue #97. When Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, who wrote dialogue based on Liefeld's plots, took over as writers of the final three issues of the series, they included several harder-edged characters: "Domino" (Vanessa Geraldine Carlysle), Cable's pale-skinned, black-garbed mercenary lover. Actually Copycat, impersonating Domino. Feral (Maria Callasantos), who possessed a bestial temperament and appearance. Shatterstar (Gaveedra Seven), a swashbuckling warrior from another dimension. Warpath (James Proudstar), the younger brother of slain X-Man Thunderbird and a former Hellion, an Apache who possessed super strength and speed. The New Mutants was cancelled in 1991 with issue #100, but the new platoon-like team formed by Cable continued in X-Force, a successful series (whose first issue sold approximately one million copies) [ citation needed] that would continue until 2002, and feature a variety of the former New Mutants cast. Cast [ edit] Collected Editions [ edit] The New Mutants has been reprinted in several trade paperbacks, some containing specific story arcs (such as the "Demon Bear Saga" by Claremont and Sienkiewicz), and some collected as part of a larger crossover of the various X-titles. Only in 2006, however, did a chronological reprinting of the series begin, with the commencement of The New Mutants Classic series of trade paperbacks. Publication information Publisher Marvel Comics First appearance New X-Men: Academy X #2 (August 2004) Created by Nunzio DeFilippis Christina Weir Keron Grant Randy Green In-story information Base(s) Xavier Institute for Higher Learning Member(s) Danielle Moonstar (advisor) Elixir Icarus Prodigy Surge Wallflower Wind Dancer Wither The second incarnation of the New Mutants debuted in 2003 with an ongoing series of the same name, written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir. The series would continue for 13 issues, until June 2004, before being relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X in July 2004, with a new #1. The series featured a handful of the dozens of mutant teenagers attending the Xavier Institute, as well as their instructors, which included various X-Men as well as former members of the original New Mutants ( Karma, Magma, Dani Moonstar, and Wolfsbane). The featured group of students never refer to themselves as "the New Mutants" before the series relaunch as New X-Men: Academy X in 2004, and the reorganization of the Xavier Institute student body into various training squads. The New Mutants, advised by Dani Moonstar, were: Elixir (Josh Foley) – Josh is an Omega-Level mutant who can manipulate his or others' biologies to heal or harm. In addition, Elixir possesses gold skin which converts to black when he uses his powers offensively. He was one of the 27 students at the Xavier Institute to retain his powers after "M-Day". He was seemingly killed by the Dark Riders before returning with vastly enhanced abilities. He is currently taking refuge in Tibet with Xorn. Icarus (Joshua "Jay" Guthrie) – Jay possesses red angelic wings on his back that allow him to fly and which grant him an accelerated healing process. Furthermore, he possesses the ability to manipulate his own voice. Jay's wings are amputated by Stryker, [11] who later kills him. [12] Prodigy (David Alleyne) – David was the team's co-leader who could temporarily gain the knowledge and skills of those near him. Although he was de-powered after "M-Day", he has retained all the knowledge he had acquired prior to the "Decimation". [13] Current member of the Young Avengers. Surge (Noriko Ashida) – Noriko is Japanese. She absorbs electricity from her environment which she can discharge as powerful electric blasts or utilize as superhuman speed. She requires mechanical gauntlets to prevent overcharge. Surge was one of the 27 students at the Xavier Institute to retain her powers after "M-Day". She is currently a student of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. Wallflower (Laurie Collins) – Laurie is a shy girl who generates highly potent pheromones that influence people's emotions. She was one of the 27 students at the Xavier Institute to retain her powers after "M-Day". Laurie was later killed by one of Stryker 's men. [14] Wind Dancer (Sofia Mantega) – Sofia was the other co-leader and was a temperamental aerokinetic who was particularly adept at using this power to manipulate sound. She was depowered after "M-Day" and joined a group of fellow ex-mutants as part of the New Warriors. Donning a variety of mechanical gear, she took up the codename Renascence before the group disbanded. Her current whereabouts are unknown. Wither (Kevin Ford) – Kevin could cause organic material to decay with his touch. He eventually switches to the Hellions squad. [15] He is later killed by Elixir. [16] Another such group, advised by Emma Frost, was known as the Hellions and, like their predecessor, was the arch-rival of the New Mutants. Whereas the original New Mutants series revolved around battles with world-threatening menaces, New Mutants volume 2 focused on the characters' personal relationships and struggles with controlling their powers. After " M-Day ", the cataclysmic event that decimated the world's mutant population, only 27 of the 182 students enrolled at the Xavier Institute retained their powers. The New Mutants and the other training squads were disbanded, and the remaining students were folded into a single junior team, the New X-Men. The series was initially written by Zeb Wells and pencilled by Diogenes Neves with the titular characters forming a new field team for the X-Men. The team is a reunion of the cast from the first volume, consisting of Cannonball, Karma, Magik, Magma, Dani Moonstar and Sunspot. The reunion is spun from events from the limited series X-Infernus. Magik shows up at the X-Men headquarters in San Francisco, claiming to be from the future and warning that Dani Moonstar and Karma are in danger. Once tests show that Illyanna is not an imposter, Cannonball leads a rescue mission with her. They are joined by Magma and Sunspot. [18] They end up taking on Legion. In later issue, Warlock returns to Earth [19] and Cypher reappears alive, under the control of Selene. After Warlock frees him from Selene's control, Cypher joins the team. [20] [21] During " Siege ", Hela empowers Dani (now going by the codename Mirage [22]) as a Valkyrie to bring the souls of the fallen Asgardians to her. During " X-Men: Second Coming ", Karma loses her leg after being repeatedly stabbed by Cameron Hodge. [23] It is replaced with a bionic one. Magik leads the team to Limbo, as part of her plan for revenge against the Elder Gods. Cyclops has her imprisoned for her actions. [24] In the same issue, Cannonball and Karma also leave the team. After they successfully rescue him from Sugar Man, Nate Grey joins the team. [25] When the X-Men split in X-Men: Schism, the team sides with Cyclops and stays on Utopia. [26] Their next mission is to find Blink. After locating her and helping her defeat a mutant rock band (Diskhord), Blink returns with them but decides to join the X-Men at the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning. [27] She does join them during the last issues of the series. Other denizens of Terra include Rain's lady-in-waiting Tabby (Boom-Boom), the knights Richard (Rictor), Robert (Sunspot), and Samuel (Cannonball) and the peasant boy Douglas (Cypher). The Terrans all duplicate the powers of their counterparts in one way or another. [36] New Mutants: Truth or Death [ edit] In 1997, a three-issue reunion series written by Ben Raab and illustrated by Bernard Chang, New Mutants: Truth or Death, featured the young New Mutants traveling forward in time to meet their older, jaded selves in X-Force. Worst X-Man Ever [ edit] Here the New Mutants consist of X-Ceptional, who can explode permanently, Riches, who turns whatever he touches to gold, Minerva, who can manipulate reality, and Riches' sister Rags. Riches kills Professor X and takes over the world. Rags begins a relationship with Gambit, and Minerva goes to pure idea. X-Ceptional grabs Riches and explodes, killing them both. [37] Ultimate Marvel [ edit] In Ultimate X-Men, the Academy of Tomorrow (previously called New Mutants) is founded by Emma Frost. It is loosely linked to the X-Men via Emma Frost's professional relationship with her former lover and teacher Charles Xavier. This Academy accepts any talented students, regardless of their genetic status. The team is headed by a non-telepathic and more pacifistic version of Emma Frost and headed by field leader Havok. During Ultimatum, the Academy of Tomorrow is destroyed in a terrorist attack by Multiple Man. [38] Former members include Angel, Beast, Cannonball, Cypher, Dazzler, Karma, Northstar, Polaris, and Sunspot. In other media [ edit] Television [ edit] The animated TV series X-Men: Evolution (2000–2003) featured a group called the New Mutants who, like their comic book counterparts, were a junior team living at the Xavier Institute concurrently with the X-Men. The team featured Boom-Boom, Cannonball, Magma, Sunspot and Wolfsbane. Other members, such as Berzerker, Iceman, Jubilee, and Multiple Man were not New Mutants in the comic book series, but were featured in other X-Men comics. Mirage also appeared in the show's penultimate episode where she joined the team in a dream she projected into Shadowcat 's head. New Mutants is the name given to the "race" of Mutants on the television show Mutant X. Film [ edit] The live-action film X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) featured several of the New Mutants characters in supporting roles, namely Clarice Ferguson / Blink, James Proudstar / Warpath, and Robert da Costa / Sunspot portrayed by Fan Bingbing, Booboo Stewart and Adan Canto, respectively. [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] In May 2015, 20th Century Fox announced Josh Boone will direct a film adaptation of the New Mutants. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg will be producing the film, while Boone and Knate Gwaltney are writing the script. Boone and Gwaltney initially pitched the film to Kinberg and Fox by making a comic book mapping out a trilogy of New Mutant movies using panels from the original issues. [44] In October 2015, [1] [45] Boone tweeted that the first draft for the script is complete. [46] Kinberg has stated that the film will be a young-adult style movie. [47] On March 31, 2016, HitFix reported that Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy were rumored to be cast as Wolfsbane and Magik. [48] Boone announced on his Instagram account that the second draft for the film is finished. [49] Boone posted a photo on his Instagram page showing that those appearing will include Magik, [50] Wolfsbane, [51] Mirage, [52] Cannonball, [53] Sunspot, [54] and Warlock. [55] [56] Kinberg told Collider in an interview that Professor X will appear and filming may start in early 2017 and told That Hashtag Show that the film is very loyal to the comics. [57] [58] On August 25, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Boone will re-team with his The Fault In Our Stars writers Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber to write the script. [59] On November 9, 2016, Kinberg announced to The Hollywood Reporter that filming would start in spring 2017. [60] At almost the end of the month, Coming reported that Demon Bear would be the main antagonist in the film, the site also reveal that 20th Century Fox is currently targeting a Spring 2018 release date, the film's tone is describing as a " Stephen King meets John Hughes -style horror movie" and that Nat Wolff is being eyed for the role of Cannonball. [61] In December 2016, it was announced that the film would begin production in May 2017. [62] That same month, Boone told Creative Screenwriting that the film inspired his script from Chris Claremont's run with Demon Bear. [63] In January 2017, Taylor-Joy confirmed in an interview with Superhero Hype that James McAvoy will be reprising his role as Charles Xavier / Professor X in the film. [64] In May 2017, Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams were officially cast to play Magik and Wolfsbane respectively. Later that month, Charlie Heaton and Henry Zaga were cast to play Cannonball and Sunspot. On June 2, 2017, Blu Hunt was cast as Mirage. [65] [66] [67] The film is scheduled for release on April 3, 2020. References [ edit] ^ a b Fleming, Jr, Mike (May 13, 2015). It’s taken two years for the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants to make it to theaters, and the movie has now been pulled from its most recent release date of April 3 due to public health concerns regarding COVID-19. The announcement comes on the heels of an extensive list of other film delays. A Quiet Place 2, F9, and No Time to Die have all had their release dates pushed, and Disney has also pulled the release of Mulan and the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror movie Antlers, in response to the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring coronavirus to be a pandemic. The NBA also announced that it was suspending its regular season indefinitely, and South by Southwest, Coachella, and Electronic Entertainment Expo have been cancelled or postponed. The New Mutants, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton as comics characters Magik, Wolfsbane, and Cannonball, respectively, focuses on a group of young mutants who are trapped in a secret facility and must fight their way out. The movie has been delayed indefinitely, and there is no official statement from 20th Century Studios yet.

It is the seventh film adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, and Chris Cooper. Little Women had its world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on December 7, 2019, and was released theatrically in the United States on December 25, 2019, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film received critical acclaim, and has grossed $204 million worldwide. Among its numerous accolades, the film received six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Pugh), and Best Adapted Screenplay, [5] and won for Best Costume Design. It also received five nominations at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards, winning for Best Costume Design, and two nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards. Plot [ edit] In 1868, Jo is a teacher in New York City. She goes to an editor, Mr. Dashwood, and gets a story published subject to considerable editing, although she doesn't want her name on it. Her sister Amy, in Paris with their Aunt March, sees childhood friend Laurie and invites him to a party. At the party, she is angry at his drunken behavior, and he mocks her for spending time with a wealthy businessman, Fred Vaughn. In New York, Jo meets with Friedrich Bhaer, a professor infatuated with her, and he constructively criticizes her work. Jo takes it personally and breaks their friendship off. In 1861 in Concord, Massachusetts, Jo and Meg go to a party where Jo feels like an outsider. She meets Laurie, the grandson of their neighbor Mr. Laurence, who feels the same way. Laurie is new to town and spent most of his life in Europe. They spend the evening together dancing around the house. When Meg injures her foot, Laurie helps to get the girls home and meets the March family. On Christmas morning, their mother, "Marmee", persuades the girls to give their breakfast to their poor neighbor, Mrs. Hummel, and her group of starving young children. Upon returning home, the girls see their table full of food, provided by Mr. Laurence who saw them give away their breakfast, and a letter from their father fighting in the American Civil War. Jo visits their Aunt March, who tries to persuade Jo to be a proper young lady and to marry rich. She invites Jo to Europe with her, which Jo eagerly accepts. During his Latin lesson, Laurie notices Amy standing outside crying, having been hit by her teacher for misbehaving in class (she drew a caricature of him), and invites her in before her family comes to take her home. The girls meet John Brooke, Laurie's tutor. In the present, Laurie visits Amy to apologize for his behavior at the party. Later, he urges Amy not to marry Fred Vaughn, but to marry him instead. Amy is upset at being second for everything to Jo, including Laurie. Amy later turns down Fred's proposal only to learn that Laurie left for London. Meg confesses to her husband that she is tired of being poor, which makes him feel guilty of not being able to give her the things she wants. She quickly has a change of heart and tells him that she loves him anyway. On Meg's wedding day to John Brooke, Jo tries to convince her to run away and claims Meg should be an actress, but Meg tells her she is happy getting married. Aunt March announces her trip to Europe but decides to take Amy instead of Jo, thinking of Jo as a lost cause. After the wedding, Laurie admits his feelings for Jo, but she insists she does not feel the same way, that they are too different and would drive each other crazy In New York, Mr. Dashwood's daughters find the chapters of Jo's book and ask how it ends. He agrees to publish the book but finds it unacceptable that the main character was unmarried. Jo amends her ending so that the main character, herself, chases after Bhaer and stops him from going to California. She negotiates copyright and royalties with Mr. Dashwood. Jo observes as printers print her book, titled Little Women. Later, Jo has inherited Aunt March's house and opened it as a school. Meg teaches acting, and Amy teaches art to the schoolchildren. Bhaer is also shown teaching children at the school. Laurie and Amy are shown with their child. The sisters celebrate their mother's birthday in the garden. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] In October 2013, it was announced a new film adaption of Little Women was in development at Sony Pictures, with Olivia Milch writing the script, and Robin Swicord and Denise Di Novi serving as producers. [6] In March 2015, Amy Pascal joined as a producer on the new adaptation, with Sarah Polley hired to write the script and potentially direct. [7] Ultimately, Polley's involvement never went beyond initial discussions. [8] In August 2016, Greta Gerwig was hired to write the script. [9] In June 2018, in light of her awards season success with Lady Bird, Gerwig was brought on as director as well. [10] [11] Casting [ edit] In June 2018, it was announced that Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Florence Pugh had been cast for the film in undisclosed roles. [10] [11] In July 2018, Eliza Scanlen joined the cast as well, [12] and in August 2018, James Norton and Laura Dern also signed on to appear. [13] [14] Then, in the same month, Stone dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with the press tour for The Favourite, and Emma Watson replaced her. [15] In September 2018, Louis Garrel, Bob Odenkirk and Chris Cooper joined the cast in other roles. [16] [17] [18] In October 2018, New Regency Pictures was announced as an additional financier on the film, and Abby Quinn joined the cast. [19] [20] Filming [ edit] Principal photography began on October 5, 2018, in Boston, Massachusetts. [21] Additional filming locations included Lancaster, Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., the town of Harvard, Massachusetts, and Concord, Massachusetts. [22] Harvard's Arnold Arboretum was used as a location to shoot a scene set in a 19th-century Paris park. [23] Filming wrapped on December 15, 2018. [24] [25] Saoirse Ronan stated that, as previously done with Lady Bird, Gerwig banned cellphones on the set. [26] Music [ edit] On April 8, 2019, it was announced that Alexandre Desplat had been hired to compose the film's score. [27] Release [ edit] Little Women had its world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on December 7, 2019, [28] and also screened as the opening film of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival on December 9, 2019. [29] It was theatrically released in the United States on December 25, 2019 by Sony Pictures Releasing. [30] [31] Marketing [ edit] On December 13, 2018, Emma Watson posted an on set photo on social media of herself with writer-director Greta Gerwig and co-stars Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, and Timothée Chalamet. [32] Six days later, Watson posted another on set photo of her along with Gerwig and co-star Laura Dern. [33] On June 19, 2019, Vanity Fair released the first stills from the film. [34] The official trailer for the film was released on August 13, 2019. [35] Home media [ edit] Little Women is set to be released digitally on March 10, 2020, and on Blu-ray and DVD on April 7, 2020. [36] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of March 8, 2020, Little Women has grossed $108 million in the United States and Canada, and $97 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $205 million. [3] [4] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside Spies in Disguise and the expansion of Uncut Gems, and was projected to gross $18–22 million from 3, 308 over its five-day opening weekend. The film made $6. 4 million on Christmas Day and $6 million on its second day. [37] It went on to debut to $16. 8 million (a total of $29. 2 million over the five-day Christmas frame), finishing in fourth. [38] [39] In its second weekend, the film grossed $13. 6 million, finishing third. [40] It then made $7. 8 million and $6. 4 million, respectively, the following weekends. [41] [42] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 95% based on 379 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 56/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "With a stellar cast and a smart, sensitive retelling of its classic source material, Greta Gerwig's Little Women proves some stories truly are timeless. " [43] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 91 out of 100, based on 57 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". [44] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale, and viewers polled by PostTrak gave it an average five out of five stars. [38] Gerwig's direction was deemed notable for several reasons. Kate Erbland of Indiewire commended Gerwig for how she "modernized the book's timeless story in unexpected ways", [45] while also maintaining an "affection for the original, and keenly aware of how the concerns of Alcott and the March sisters (loosely based on the author’s own family) have never quite abated, no matter the time. " [46] She was also lauded for her screenplay, with Brian Truitt of USA Today dubbing her writing "a fantastic follow-up to her Oscar-nominated Lady Bird that makes Alcott's time and language feel effervescently modern and authentically nostalgic. " [47] The cast was lauded for their collective acting, with one reviewer calling their work "stellar across the board. " [47] Although there were some concerns from critics about miscasting, [46] the overall critics review for the ensemble cast was positive. While the performances of Watson, Dern and Streep as Meg, Marmie and Aunt March, respectively, were commended for bringing depth and empathy, as well as warmth and sensibility to their roles, [48] [49] Ronan, Pugh, and Chalamet earned the most praise for their acting. Ronan and Pugh's performances in scenes together were called by one source as "standouts, portraying the growth of their characters over time but also the combustible dynamic between Jo and Amy, " [47] with other reviewers in agreement. For their individual performances, they both were also given attention, where Ronan "shines as the wonderfully brash and opinionated Jo March" [49] and Pugh's "scenes with Chalamet are more convincing, and her brush with the financial realities of life and the struggle to make a career are more relevant, even though she's the spoiled baby sister of a century and a half ago. " [50] Chalamet was praised for his "earnest and swaggering performance" as Laurie. [51] Ronan and Chalamet were also noted for their "great romantic chemistry". Namely, the main complaint was Gerwig's failure to receive an Academy Award nomination for directing. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has nominated only five women for directing in its awards history, was criticized for not only overlooking Gerwig's directorial effort but the work of all female directors in 2019. [83] Her lack of recognition was attributed by reviewers as part of a larger issue that "reinforces the film's assertion that creative women are not celebrated as much as their male counterparts. " [84] Critics also noted the lack of recognition for the film's production design and cinematography, as well as the makeup and hairstyling. [83] Accolades [ edit] The film has received numerous awards and nominations. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it received six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Pugh) and Best Adapted Screenplay, [85] and won for Best Costume Design [86] in spite of taking great liberty with historical accuracy of the fashions and hairstyles featured. At the 25th Critics' Choice Awards, it received nine nominations, winning for Best Adapted Screenplay. [87] [88] The film also received five nominations at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards and two nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, and was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year. Dang. All yall do is fight. Simply put, an Amy March that you can understand and don't despise! Florence Pugh is a great actress and played this character well. From young teenage years to adulthood, you actually get an Amy that you somewhat even like: believe me, that's saying a lot for us fans!
Overall, this film had wonderful acting from ALL of the cast that includes amazing actresses like Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, Eliza Stanlen and Laura Dern; wonderful directing and cinematography that made the scenes intimate, emotional, and clearly showed that the main bonds and characters were the four sisters (and their mother.
They showed how all of them had a strong relationship with Laurie and showed how Amy liked him from day one (see above.
I really enjoyed it and was enthralled the entire film. I highly recommend it.

Little Women First volume of Little Women (1868) Author Louisa May Alcott Country United States Language English Series Little Women Genre Coming of age Bildungsroman Publisher Roberts Brothers Publication date 1868 (1st volume) 1869 (2nd volume) Media type Print Pages 759 Followed by Little Men Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the book over several months at the request of her publisher. [1] [2] The story follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. It is loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters. [3] [4]: 202 Scholars classify it as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel. [5] [6]: 12 Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, with readers demanding to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume (titled Good Wives in the United Kingdom, although this name originated from the publisher and not from Alcott), and it was also successful. The two volumes were issued in 1880 as a single novel titled Little Women. Alcott wrote two sequels to her popular work, both of which also featured the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). The novel addresses three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity. " [7]: 200 According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from Romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new format. Elbert argues that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the " All-American girl " and that her various aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters. [7]: 199 The book has frequently been adapted for stage and screen. Development history [ edit] In 1868, Thomas Niles, the publisher of Louisa May Alcott, recommended that she write a book about girls that would have widespread appeal. [4]: 2 At first she resisted, preferring to publish a collection of her short stories. Niles pressed her to write the girls' book first, and he was aided by her father Amos Bronson Alcott, who also urged her to do so. [4]: 207 Louisa confided to a friend, “I could not write a girl’s story knowing little about any but my own sisters and always preferring boys”, as quoted in Anne Boyd Rioux's Meg Jo Beth Amy, a condensed biographical account of Alcott's life and writing. In May 1868, Alcott wrote in her journal: "Niles, partner of Roberts, asked me to write a girl's book. I said I'd try. " [8]: 36 Alcott set her novel in an imaginary Orchard House modeled on her own residence of the same name, where she wrote the novel. [4]: xiii She later recalled that she did not think she could write a successful book for girls and did not enjoy writing it. [9]: 335- "I plod away, " she wrote in her diary, "although I don't enjoy this sort of things. " [8]: 37 By June, Alcott had sent the first dozen chapters to Niles, and both agreed these were dull. But Niles' niece Lillie Almy read them and said she enjoyed them. [9]: 335–336 The completed manuscript was shown to several girls, who agreed it was "splendid. ” Alcott wrote, "they are the best critics, so I should definitely be satisfied. " [8]: 37 She wrote Little Women "in record time for money, " [7]: 196x2 but the book's immediate success surprised both her and her publisher. [10] Explanation of the novel's title [ edit] According to literary critic Sarah Elbert, when using the term "little women", Alcott was drawing on its Dickensian meaning; it represented the period in a young woman's life where childhood and elder childhood were "overlapping" with young womanhood. Each of the March sister heroines had a harrowing experience that alerted her and the reader that "childhood innocence" was of the past, and that "the inescapable woman problem" was all that remained. [7] [ page needed] Other views suggest that the title was meant to highlight the unfair social inferiority, especially at that time, of women as compared to men, or, alternatively, describe the lives of simple people, "unimportant" in the social sense. [11] Plot summary [ edit] Part One [ edit] Four sisters and their mother, whom they call Marmee, live in a new neighborhood (loosely based on Concord) in Massachusetts in genteel poverty. Having lost all his money, their father is acting as a pastor in the American Civil War, far from home. The women face their first Christmas without him. Meg and Jo March, the elder two, have to work in order to support the family: Meg teaches a nearby family of four children; Jo assists her aged great-aunt March, a wealthy widow living in a mansion, Plumfield. Beth, too timid for school, is content to stay at home and help with housework; Amy is still at school. Meg is beautiful and traditional, Jo is a tomboy who writes; Beth is a peacemaker and a pianist; Amy is an artist who longs for elegance and fine society. Jo is impulsive and quick to anger. One of her challenges is trying to control her anger, a challenge that her mother experiences. She advises Jo to speak with forethought before leaving to travel to Washington, where her husband has pneumonia. Their neighbor, Mr. Laurence, who is charmed by Beth, gives her a piano. Beth contracts scarlet fever after spending time with a poor family where three children die. Jo tends Beth in her illness. Beth recovers, but never fully. As a precaution, Amy is sent to live with Aunt March, replacing Jo, while Beth is ill and still infectious. Jo has success in earning money with her writing. Meg spends two weeks with friends, where there are parties for the girls to dance with boys and improve their social skills. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, Mr. Laurence's grandson, is invited to one of the dances, as Meg's friends incorrectly think she is in love with him. Meg is more interested in John Brooke, Laurie's young tutor. Brooke goes to Washington to help Mr. March. While with the March parents, Brooke confesses his love for Meg. They are pleased but consider Meg too young to be married. Brooke agrees to wait. He enlists and serves a year or so in the war. After he is wounded, he returns to find work so he can buy a house ready for when he marries Meg. Laurie goes off to college. On Christmas Day, a year after the book's opening, the girls' father returns from the war. Part Two [ edit] (Published separately in the United Kingdom as Good Wives) Three years later, Meg and John marry and learn how to live together. When they have twins, Meg is a devoted mother but John begins to feel left out. Laurie graduates from college, having put in the effort to do well in his last year with Jo's prompting. Amy goes on a European tour with her aunt. Beth's health is weak and her spirits are down. When trying to uncover the reason for Beth's sadness, Jo realizes that Laurie has fallen in love. At first she believes it's with Beth but soon senses it's with herself. Jo confides in Marmee, telling her that she loves Laurie but she loves him like a brother and that she could not love him in a romantic way. Jo decides she wants a bit of adventure and to put distance between herself and Laurie, hoping he will forget his feelings. She spends six months with a friend of her mother in New York City, serving as governess for her two children. The family runs a boarding house. She takes German lessons with Professor Bhaer, who lives in the house. He has come to America from Berlin to care for the orphaned sons of his sister. For extra money, Jo writes stories without a moral, which disappoints Bhaer. He persuades her to give up poorly written sensational stories as her time in New York comes to an end. When she returns, Laurie proposes marriage and she declines. Laurie travels to Europe with his grandfather to escape his heartbreak. At home, Beth's health has seriously deteriorated. Jo devotes her time to the care of her dying sister. Laurie encounters Amy in Europe, and he slowly falls in love with her as he begins to see her in a new light. She is unimpressed by the aimless, idle and forlorn attitude he has adopted since being rejected by Jo, and inspires him to find his purpose and do something worthwhile with his life. With the news of Beth's death, they meet for consolation and their romance grows. Amy's aunt will not allow Amy to return with just Laurie and his grandfather, so they marry before returning home from Europe. Professor Bhaer goes to the Marches' and stays for two weeks. On his last day, he proposes to Jo. Jo accepts. When Aunt March dies, she leaves Plumfield to Jo. Jo and Bhaer turn the house into a school for boys. They have two sons of their own, and Amy and Laurie have a daughter. At apple-picking time, Marmee celebrates her 60th birthday at Plumfield, with her husband, her three surviving daughters, their husbands, and her five grandchildren. Characters [ edit] Margaret "Meg" March [ edit] Meg, the eldest sister, is 16 when the story starts. She is referred to as a beauty and manages the household when her mother is absent. She is long brown-haired and blue-eyed and has particularly beautiful hands. Meg fulfills expectations for women of the time; from the start, she is already a nearly perfect "little woman" in the eyes of the world. [12] Before her marriage to John Brooke, while still living at home, she often lectures her younger sisters to ensure they grow to embody the title of "little women". [13] Meg is employed as a governess for the Kings, a wealthy local family. Because of their father's family's social standing, Meg makes her debut into high society, but is lectured by her friend and neighbor, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, for behaving like a snob. Meg marries John Brooke, Laurie's tutor. They have twins, Margaret "Daisy" Brooke and John "Demi" Brooke. The sequel, Little Men, mentions a baby daughter, Josephine "Josy" Brooke, [14] who is 14 at the beginning of the final book. [15] Critics have portrayed Meg as lacking in independence, reliant entirely on her husband, and "isolated in her little cottage with two small children". [7]: 204 From this perspective, Meg is seen as the compliant daughter. According to Sarah Elbert, "democratic domesticity requires maturity, strength, and above all a secure identity that Meg lacks". [7]: 204 Others believe that Alcott does not intend to belittle Meg for her ordinary life, and portrays her in loving detail, suffused in a sentimental light. [16] Josephine "Jo" March [ edit] The principal character, Jo, 15 years old at the beginning of the book, is a strong and willful young woman, struggling to subdue her fiery temper and stubborn personality. [17] [18] The second oldest of four sisters, Josephine March is the boyish one; her father has referred to her as his "son Jo, " and her best friend and neighbor, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence, sometimes calls her "my dear fellow, " while she alone calls him Teddy. Jo has a "hot" temper that often leads her into trouble. With the help of her own misguided sense of humor, her sister Beth, and her mother, she works on controlling it. It has been said that much of Louisa May Alcott shows through in these characteristics of Jo. [19] Jo loves literature, both reading and writing. She composes plays for her sisters to perform and writes short stories. She initially rejects the idea of marriage and romance, feeling that it would break up her family and separate her from the sisters whom she adores. While pursuing a literary career in New York City, she meets Friedrich Bhaer, a German professor. On her return home, Jo rejects Laurie's marriage proposal, confirming her independence. After Beth dies, Professor Bhaer woos Jo at her home, when "They decide to share life's burdens just as they shared the load of bundles on their shopping expedition. " [7]: 210 She is 25 years old when she accepts his proposal. The marriage is deferred until her unexpected inheritance of her Aunt March's home a year later. According to critic Barbara Sicherman, "The crucial first point is that the choice is hers, its quirkiness another sign of her much-prized individuality. " [20]: 21 They have two sons, Robin "Rob" Bhaer and Theodore "Teddy" Bhaer. Jo also writes the first part of Little Women during the second portion of the novel. According to Elbert, "her narration signals a successfully completed adolescence". [7]: 199 Elizabeth "Beth" March [ edit] Beth, 13 when the story starts, is described as kind, gentle, sweet, shy, quiet and musical. She is the shyest March sister. [21]: 53 Infused with quiet wisdom, she is the peacemaker of the family and gently scolds her sisters when they argue. [22] As her sisters grow up, they begin to leave home, but Beth has no desire to leave her house or family. She is especially close to Jo: when Beth develops scarlet fever after visiting the Hummels, Jo does most of the nursing and rarely leaves her side. Beth recovers from the acute disease but her health is permanently weakened. As she grows, Beth begins to realize that her time with her loved ones is coming to an end. Finally, the family accepts that Beth will not live much longer. They make a special room for her, filled with all the things she loves best: her kittens, her piano, Father's books, Amy's sketches, and her beloved dolls. She is never idle; she knits and sews things for the children who pass by on their way to and from school. But eventually she puts down her sewing needle, saying it grew "heavy. " Beth's final sickness has a strong effect on her sisters, especially Jo, who resolves to live her life with more consideration and care for everyone. The main loss during Little Women is the death of beloved Beth. Her "self-sacrifice" is ultimately the greatest in the novel. She gives up her life knowing that it has had only private, domestic meaning. " [7]: 206–207 Amy Curtis March [ edit] Amy is the youngest sister and baby of the family, aged 12 when the story begins. Interested in art, she is described as a "regular snow-maiden" with curly golden hair and blue eyes, "pale and slender" and "always carrying herself" like a proper young lady. She is the artist of the family. [23] Often coddled because she is the youngest, Amy can behave in a vain and self-centered way. [24]: 5 She has the middle name Curtis, and is the only March sister to use her full name rather than a diminutive. [25] She is chosen by her aunt to travel in Europe with her, where she grows and makes a decision about the level of her artistic talent and how to direct her adult life. She encounters "Laurie" Laurence and his grandfather during the extended visit. Amy is the least inclined of the sisters to sacrifice and self-denial. She behaves well in good society, at ease with herself. Critic Martha Saxton observes the author was never fully at ease with Amy's moral development and her success in life seemed relatively accidental. [24] However, Amy's morality does appear to develop throughout her adolescence and early adulthood, and she is able to confidently and justly put Laurie in his place when she believes he is wasting his life on pleasurable activities. Ultimately, Amy is shown to work very hard to gain what she wants in life, and to make the most of her success while she has it. Due to her early selfishness (when her friends knew she would not share any pickled lime) and attachment to material things, Amy has been described as the least likable of the four sisters, but she is also the only one who strives to excel at art purely for self-expression, in contrast to Jo, who sometimes writes for financial gain. [26] Additional characters [ edit] Margaret "Marmee" March – The girls' mother and head of household while her husband is away. She engages in charitable works and lovingly guides her girls' morals and their characters. She once confesses to Jo that her temper is as volatile as Jo's, but that she has learned to control it. [27]: 130 Somewhat modeled after the author's own mother, she is the focus around which the girls' lives unfold as they grow. [27]: 2 Robert March – Formerly wealthy, the father is portrayed as having helped a friend who could not repay a debt, resulting in his family's genteel poverty. A scholar and a minister, he serves as a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War and is wounded in December 1862. After the war he becomes minister to a small congregation. Professor Friedrich Bhaer – A middle-aged, "philosophically inclined", and penniless German immigrant in New York City who had been a noted professor in Berlin. Also known as Fritz, he initially lives in Mrs. Kirke's boarding house and works as a language master. [21]: 61 He and Jo become friends, and he critiques her writing. He encourages her to become a serious writer instead of writing sensational stories for weekly tabloids. "Bhaer has all the qualities Bronson Alcott lacked: warmth, intimacy, and a tender capacity for expressing his affection—the feminine attributes Alcott admired and hoped men could acquire in a rational, feminist world. " [7]: 210 They eventually marry and raise his two orphaned nephews, Franz and Emil, and their own sons, Rob and Teddy. [28] Robin and Theodore Bhaer ("Rob" and "Teddy") – Jo's and Fritz's sons, introduced in the final pages of the novel, named after the March girls' father and Laurie. John Brooke – During his employment as a tutor to Laurie, he falls in love with Meg. He accompanies Mrs. March to Washington D. C. when her husband is ill with pneumonia. When Laurie leaves for college, Brooke continues his employment with Mr. Laurence as a bookkeeper. When Aunt March overhears Meg accepting John's declaration of love, she threatens Meg with disinheritance because she suspects that Brooke is only interested in Meg's future prospects. Eventually, Meg admits her feelings to Brooke, they defy Aunt March (who ends up accepting the marriage), and they are engaged. Brooke serves in the Union Army for a year and is sent home as an invalid when he is wounded. Brooke marries Meg a few years later when the war has ended and she has turned twenty. Brooke was modeled after John Bridge Pratt, her sister Anna's husband. [29] Margaret and John Laurence Brooke ("Daisy" and "Demijohn/Demi") – Meg's twin son and daughter. Daisy is named after both Meg and Marmee, while Demi is named for John and the Laurence family. Josephine Brooke ("Josy" or "Josie") – Meg's youngest child, named after Jo. She develops a passion for acting as she grows up. Uncle and Aunt Carrol – Sister and brother-in-law of Mr. They take Amy to Europe with them, where Uncle Carrol frequently tries to be like an English gentleman. Florence "Flo" Carrol – Amy's cousin, daughter of Aunt and Uncle Carrol, and companion in Europe. May and Mrs. Chester – A well-to-do family with whom the Marches are acquainted. May Chester is a girl about Amy's age, who is rich and jealous of Amy's popularity and talent. Miss Crocker – An old and poor spinster who likes to gossip and who has few friends. Mr. Dashwood – Publisher and editor of the Weekly Volcano. Mr. Davis – The schoolteacher at Amy's school. He punishes Amy for bringing pickled limes to school by striking her palm and making her stand on a platform in front of the class. She is withdrawn from the school by her mother. Estelle "Esther" Valnor – A French woman employed as a servant for Aunt March who befriends Amy. The Gardiners – Wealthy friends of Meg's. Daughter Sallie Gardiner later marries Ned Moffat. The Hummels – A poor German family consisting of a widowed mother and six children. Marmee and the girls help them by bringing food, firewood, blankets, and other comforts. They help with minor repairs to their small dwelling. Three of the children die of scarlet fever and Beth contracts the disease while caring for them. The eldest daughter, Lottchen "Lotty" Hummel, later works as a matron at Jo's school at Plumfield The Kings – A wealthy family with four children for whom Meg works as a governess. The Kirkes – Mrs. Kirke is a friend of Mrs. March's who runs a boarding house in New York. She employs Jo as governess to her two daughters, Kitty and Minnie. The Lambs – A well-off family with whom the Marches are acquainted. James Laurence – Laurie's grandfather and a wealthy neighbor of the Marches. Lonely in his mansion, and often at odds with his high-spirited grandson, he finds comfort in becoming a benefactor to the Marches. He protects the March sisters while their parents are away. He was a friend to Mrs. March's father, and admires their charitable works. He develops a special, tender friendship with Beth, who reminds him of his late granddaughter. He gives Beth the girl's piano. Theodore "Laurie" Laurence – A rich young man who lives opposite the Marches, older than Jo but younger than Meg. Laurie is the "boy next door" to the March family and has an overprotective paternal grandfather, Mr. Laurence. After eloping with an Italian pianist, Laurie's father was disowned by his parents. Both Laurie's mother and father died young, so as a boy Laurie was taken in by his grandfather. Preparing to enter Harvard, Laurie is being tutored by John Brooke. He is described as attractive and charming, with black eyes, brown skin, and curly black hair. He later falls in love with Amy and they marry; they have one child, a little girl named after Beth: Elizabeth "Bess" Laurence. Sometimes Jo calls Laurie "Teddy". Though Alcott did not make Laurie as multidimensional as the female characters, she partly based him on Ladislas Wisniewski, a young Polish émigré she had befriended, and Alf Whitman, a friend from Lawrence, Kansas. [4]: 202 [6]: 241 [24]: 287 According to author and professor Jan Susina, the portrayal of Laurie is as "the fortunate outsider", observing Mrs. March and the March sisters. He agrees with Alcott that Laurie is not strongly developed as a character. [30] Elizabeth Laurence ("Bess") – The only daughter of Laurie and Amy, named for Beth. Like her mother, she develops a love for art as she grows up. Aunt Josephine March – Mr. March's aunt, a rich widow. Somewhat temperamental and prone to being judgmental, she disapproves of the family's poverty, their charitable work, and their general disregard for the more superficial aspects of society's ways. Her vociferous disapproval of Meg's impending engagement to the impoverished Mr. Brooke becomes the proverbial "last straw" that actually causes Meg to accept his proposal. She appears to be strict and cold, but deep down, she's really quite soft-hearted. She dies near the end of the first book, and Jo and Friedrich turn her estate into a school for boys. Annie Moffat – A fashionable and wealthy friend of Meg and Sallie Gardiner. Ned Moffat – Annie Moffat's brother, who marries Sallie Gardiner. Hannah Mullet – The March family maid and cook, their only servant. She is of Irish descent and very dear to the family. She is treated more like a member of the family than a servant. Miss Norton – A friendly, well-to-do tenant living in Mrs. Kirke's boarding house. She occasionally invites Jo to accompany her to lectures and concerts. Susie Perkins – A girl at Amy's school. The Scotts – Friends of Meg and John Brooke. John knows Mr. Scott from work. Tina – The young daughter of an employee of Mrs. Kirke. Tina loves Mr. Bhaer and treats him like a father. The Vaughans – English friends of Laurie's who come to visit him. Kate is the oldest of the Vaughan siblings, and prim and proper Grace is the youngest. The middle siblings, Fred and Frank, are twins; Frank is the younger twin. Fred Vaughan – A Harvard friend of Laurie's who, in Europe, courts Amy. Rivalry with the much richer Fred for Amy's love inspires the dissipated Laurie to pull himself together and become more worthy of her. Amy will eventually reject Fred, knowing she does not love him and deciding not to marry out of ambition. [31] Frank Vaughan – Fred's twin brother, mentioned a few times in the novel. When Fred and Amy are both traveling in Europe, Fred leaves because he hears his twin is ill. Inspiration [ edit] The attic at Fruitlands where Alcott lived and acted out plays at 11 years old. Note that the ceiling area is around 4 feet high For her books, Alcott was often inspired by familiar elements. The characters in Little Women are recognizably drawn from family members and friends. [3] [4]: 202 Her married sister Anna was Meg, the family beauty. Lizzie, Alcott's beloved sister who died at the age of twenty-three, was the model for Beth, and May, Alcott's strong-willed sister, was portrayed as Amy, whose pretentious affectations cause her occasional downfalls. [4]: 202 Alcott portrayed herself as Jo. Alcott readily corresponded with readers who addressed her as "Miss March" or "Jo", and she did not correct them. [32] [33]: 31 However, Alcott's portrayal, even if inspired by her family, is an idealized one. For instance, Mr. March is portrayed as a hero of the American Civil War, a gainfully employed chaplain, and, presumably, a source of inspiration to the women of the family. He is absent for most of the novel. [33]: 51 In contrast, Bronson Alcott was very present in his family's household, due in part to his inability to find steady work. While he espoused many of the educational principles touted by the March family, he was loud and dictatorial. His lack of financial independence was a source of humiliation to his wife and daughters. [33]: 51 The March family is portrayed living in genteel penury, but the Alcott family, dependent on an improvident, impractical father, suffered real poverty and occasional hunger. [34] In addition to her own childhood and that of her sisters, scholars who have examined the diaries of Louisa Alcott's mother, Abigail Alcott, have surmised that Little Women was also heavily inspired by Abigail Alcott's own early life. [27]: 6 Publication history [ edit] The first volume of Little Women was published in 1868 by Roberts Brothers. [35] The first printing of 2, 000 copies sold out quickly, and the company had trouble keeping up with demand for additional printings. They announced: "The great literary hit of the season is undoubtedly Miss Alcott's Little Women, the orders for which continue to flow in upon us to such an extent as to make it impossible to answer them with promptness. " [8]: 37 The last line of Chapter 23 in the first volume is "So the curtain falls upon Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Whether it ever rises again, depends upon the reception given the first act of the domestic drama called Little Women. " [36] Alcott delivered the manuscript for the second volume on New Year's Day 1869, just three months after publication of part one. [9]: 345 Versions in the late 20th and 21st centuries combine both portions into one book, under the title Little Women, with the later-written portion marked as Part 2, as this Bantam Classic paperback edition, initially published in 1983 typifies. [37] There are 23 chapters in Part 1 and 47 chapters in the complete book. Each chapter is numbered and has a title as well. Part 2, Chapter 24 opens with "In order that we may start afresh and go to Meg's wedding with free minds, it will be well to begin with a little gossip about the Marches. " [36] Editions published in the 21st century may be the original text unaltered, the original text with illustrations, the original text annotated for the reader (explaining terms of 1868–69 that are less common now), the original text modernized and abridged, or the original text abridged. [38] The British influence, giving Part 2 its own title, Good Wives, has the book still published in two volumes, with Good Wives beginning three years after Little Women ends, especially in the UK and Canada, but also with some US editions. Some editions listed under Little Women appear to include both parts, especially in the audio book versions. [38] Editions are shown in continuous print from many publishers, as hardback, paperback, audio, and e-book versions, from the 1980s to 2015. [38] [39] This split of the two volumes also shows at Goodreads, which refers to the books as the Little Women series, including Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men and Jo's Boys. [40] Reception [ edit] G. K. Chesterton notes that in Little Women, Alcott "anticipated realism by twenty or thirty years", and that Fritz's proposal to Jo, and her acceptance, "is one of the really human things in human literature. " [41] Gregory S. Jackson said that Alcott's use of realism belongs to the American Protestant pedagogical tradition, which includes a range of religious literary traditions with which Alcott was familiar. He has copies in his book of nineteenth-century images of devotional children's guides which provide background for the game of "pilgrims progress" that Alcott uses in her plot of Book One. [42] Little Women was well received upon first publication. According to 21st-century critic Barbara Sicherman there was, during the 19th century, a "scarcity of models for nontraditional womanhood", which led more women to look toward "literature for self-authorization. This is especially true during adolescence. " [20]: 2 Little Women became "the paradigmatic text for young women of the era and one in which family literary culture is prominently featured. " [20]: 3 Adult elements of women's fiction in Little Women included "a change of heart necessary" for the female protagonist to evolve in the story. [7]: 199 In the late 20th century some scholars criticized the novel. Sarah Elbert, for instance, wrote that Little Women was the beginning of "a decline in the radical power of women's fiction", partly because women's fiction was being idealized with a "hearth and home" children's story. [7]: 197 Women's literature historians and juvenile fiction historians have agreed that Little Women was the beginning of this "downward spiral". But Elbert says that Little Women did not "belittle women's fiction" and that Alcott stayed true to her "Romantic birthright". [7]: 198–199 Little Women' s popular audience was responsive to ideas of social change as they were shown "within the familiar construct of domesticity". [7]: 220 While Alcott had been commissioned to "write a story for girls", her primary heroine, Jo March, became a favorite of many different women, including educated women writers through the 20th century. The girl story became a "new publishing category with a domestic focus that paralleled boys' adventure stories". [20]: 3–4 One reason the novel was so popular was that it appealed to different classes of women along with those of different national backgrounds, at a time of high immigration to the United States. Through the March sisters, women could relate and dream where they may not have before. [20]: 3–4 "Both the passion Little Women has engendered in diverse readers and its ability to survive its era and transcend its genre point to a text of unusual permeability. " [20]: 35 At the time, young girls perceived that marriage was their end goal. After the publication of the first volume, many girls wrote to Alcott asking her "who the little women marry". [20]: 21 The unresolved ending added to the popularity of Little Women. Sicherman said that the unsatisfying ending worked to "keep the story alive" as if the reader might find it ended differently upon different readings. [20]: 21 "Alcott particularly battled the conventional marriage plot in writing Little Women. " [43] Alcott did not have Jo accept Laurie's hand in marriage; rather, when she arranged for Jo to marry, she portrayed an unconventional man as her husband. Alcott used Friedrich to "subvert adolescent romantic ideals" because he was much older and seemingly unsuited for Jo. [20]: 21 In 2003 Little Women was ranked number 18 in The Big Read, a survey of the British public by the BBC to determine the "Nation's Best-loved Novel" (not children's novel); it is fourth-highest among novels published in the U. S. on that list. [44] Based on a 2007 online poll, the U. National Education Association named it one of "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". [45] In 2012 it was ranked number 48 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a monthly with primarily US audience. [46] Influence [ edit] Little Women has been one of the most widely read novels, noted by Stern from a 1927 report in the New York Times and cited in Little Women and the Feminist Imagination: Criticism, Controversy, Personal Essays. [47] Ruth MacDonald argued that "Louisa May Alcott stands as one of the great American practitioners of the girls' novel and the family story. " [48] In the 1860s, gendered separation of children's fiction was a newer division in literature. This division signaled a beginning of polarization of gender roles as social constructs "as class stratification increased". [20]: 18 Joy Kasson wrote, "Alcott chronicled the coming of age of young girls, their struggles with issues such as selfishness and generosity, the nature of individual integrity, and, above all, the question of their place in the world around them. " [49] Girls related to the March sisters in Little Women, along with following the lead of their heroines, by assimilating aspects of the story into their own lives. [20]: 22 After reading Little Women, some women felt the need to "acquire new and more public identities", however dependent on other factors such as financial resources. [20]: 55 While Little Women showed regular lives of American middle-class girls, it also "legitimized" their dreams to do something different and allowed them to consider the possibilities. [20]: 36 More young women started writing stories that had adventurous plots and "stories of individual achievement—traditionally coded male—challenged women's socialization into domesticity. " [20]: 55 Little Women also influenced contemporary European immigrants to the United States who wanted to assimilate into middle-class culture. In the pages of Little Women, young and adolescent girls read the normalization of ambitious women. This provided an alternative to the previously normalized gender roles. [20]: 35 Little Women repeatedly reinforced the importance of "individuality" and "female vocation". [20]: 26 Little Women had "continued relevance of its subject" and "its longevity points as well to surprising continuities in gender norms from the 1860s at least through the 1960s. " [20]: 35 Those interested in domestic reform could look to the pages of Little Women to see how a "democratic household" would operate. [7]: 276 While "Alcott never questioned the value of domesticity", she challenged the social constructs that made spinsters obscure and fringe members of society solely because they were not married. [7]: 193 " Little Women indisputably enlarges the myth of American womanhood by insisting that the home and the women's sphere cherish individuality and thus produce young adults who can make their way in the world while preserving a critical distance from its social arrangements. " As with all youth, the March girls had to grow up. These sisters, and in particular Jo, were apprehensive about adulthood because they were afraid that, by conforming to what society wanted, they would lose their special individuality. [7]: 199 Alcott's Jo also made professional writing imaginable for generations of women. Writers as diverse as Maxine Hong Kingston, Margaret Atwood, and J. Rowling have noted the influence of Jo March on their artistic development. Even other fictional portraits of young women aspiring to authorship often reference Jo March. [50] Alcott "made women's rights integral to her stories, and above all to Little Women. " [7]: 193 Alcott's fiction became her "most important feminist contribution"—even considering all the effort Alcott made to help facilitate women's rights. " [7]: 193 She thought that "a democratic household could evolve into a feminist society". In Little Women, she imagined that just such an evolution might begin with Plumfield, a nineteenth century feminist utopia. [7]: 194 Little Women has a timeless resonance which reflects Alcott's grasp of her historical framework in the 1860s. The novel's ideas do not intrude themselves upon the reader because the author is wholly in control of the implications of her imaginative structure. Sexual equality is the salvation of marriage and the family; democratic relationships make happy endings. This is the unifying imaginative frame of Little Women. [7]: 276 Adaptations [ edit] Stage [ edit] Scene from the 1912 Broadway production of Little Women, adapted by Marian de Forest Katharine Cornell became a star in the 1919 London production of de Forest's adaptation of Little Women Marian de Forest adapted Little Women for the Broadway stage in 1912. [51] The 1919 London production made a star of Katharine Cornell, who played the role of Jo. [52] A one-act stage version, written by Gerald P. Murphy in 2009, [53] has been produced in the US, UK, Italy, Australia, Ireland, and Singapore. [ citation needed] Myriad Theatre & Film adapted the novel as a full-length play which was staged in London and Essex in 2011. [54] Marisha Chamberlain [55] [56] and June Lowery [57] have both adapted the novel as a full-length play; the latter play was staged in Luxembourg in 2014. Isabella Russell-Ides created two stage adaptations. Her Little Women featured an appearance by author, Louisa May Alcott. Jo & Louisa features a rousing confrontation between the unhappy character, Jo March, who wants rewrites from her author. [58] [59] A new adaptation by award-winning playwright Kate Hamill had its world premiere in 2018 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis, followed by a New York premiere in 2019 at Primary Stages directed by Sarna Lapine. [60] Film [ edit] Little Women has been adapted to film seven times. The first adaptation was a silent film directed by Alexander Butler and released in 1917, which starred Daisy Burrell as Amy, Mary Lincoln as Meg, Ruby Miller as Jo, and Muriel Myers as Beth. It is considered a lost film. Another silent film adaptation was released in 1918 and directed by Harley Knoles. It starred Isabel Lamon as Meg, Dorothy Bernard as Jo, Lillian Hall as Beth, and Florence Flinn as Amy. George Cukor directed the first sound adaptation of Little Women, starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo, Joan Bennett as Amy, Frances Dee as Meg, and Jean Parker as Beth. The film was released in 1933 and followed by an adaptation of Little Men the year after. The first color adaptation starred June Allyson as Jo, Margaret O'Brien as Beth, Elizabeth Taylor as Amy, and Janet Leigh as Meg. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, it was released in 1949. Gillian Armstrong directed a 1994 adaptation, which starred Winona Ryder as Jo, Trini Alvarado as Meg, Samantha Mathis and Kirsten Dunst as Amy, and Claire Danes as Beth. [61] The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Ryder. A contemporary film adaptation [62] was released in 2018 to mark the 150th anniversary of the novel. [63] It was directed by Clare Niederpruem in her directorial debut and starred Sarah Davenport as Jo, Allie Jennings as Beth, Melanie Stone as Meg, and Elise Jones and Taylor Murphy as Amy. [63] A 2019 adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig starred Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Emma Watson as Meg, Florence Pugh as Amy, and Eliza Scanlen as Beth. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. [64] Television [ edit] Little Women was adapted into a television musical, in 1958, by composer Richard Adler for CBS. [65] Little Women has been made into a serial four times by the BBC: in 1950 (when it was shown live), in 1958, in 1970, [66] and in 2017. [67] The 3-episode 2017 series development was supported by PBS, and was aired as part of the PBS Masterpiece anthology in 2018. Universal Television produced a two-part miniseries based on the novel, which aired on NBC in 1978. It was followed by a 1979 series. In the 1980s, two anime series were made in Japan, Little Women in 1981 and Tales of Little Women in 1987. Both anime series were dubbed in English and shown on American television. In 2012, Lifetime aired The March Sisters at Christmas (directed by John Simpson), a contemporary television film focusing on the title characters' efforts to save their family home from being sold. [68] It is usually rebroadcast on the channel each holiday season. [69] A 2018 adaption is that of Manor Rama Pictures LLP of Karan Raj Kohli & Viraj Kapur which streams on the ALTBalaji app in India. The web series is called Haq Se. Set in Kashmir, the series is a modern-day Indian adaptation of the book. Musicals and opera [ edit] The novel was adapted to a musical of the same name and debuted on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre on January 23, 2005 and closed on May 22, 2005 after 137 performances. A production was also staged in Sydney, Australia in 2008. [70] The Houston Grand Opera commissioned and performed Little Women in 1998. The opera was aired on television by PBS in 2001 and has been staged by other opera companies since the premiere. [71] There is a Canadian musical version, with book by Nancy Early and music and lyrics by Jim Betts, which has been produced at several regional theatres in Canada. There was another musical version, entitled "Jo", with music by William Dyer and book and lyrics by Don Parks & William Dyer, which was produced off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. It ran for 63 performances from February 12, 1964, to April 5, 1964. It featured Karin Wolfe (Jo), Susan Browning (Meg), Judith McCauley (Beth), April Shawhan (Amy), Don Stewart (Laurie), Joy Hodges (Marmee), Lowell Harris (John Brooke) and Mimi Randolph (Aunt March). Audio drama [ edit] A radio play starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo was made to accompany the 1933 film. Grand Audiobooks hold the current copyright. A dramatized version, produced by Focus on the Family Radio Theatre, [72] was released on September 4, 2012.
