So, while I feel all of your pain over not having a JOJ recording to view at your leisure, business dictates Alfie is the correct choice. Its tonality emphasises on one little girl’s unabashed and unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge – not just for her own sake, but for every other girl child around her. True, the subject of this biographical piece is fascinating but, H. E Amjad Khan’s approach towards the same does not translate onto the big screen. For one, the narrative is messy from the word go and although Khan tries to juxtaposition Malala’s inner turmoil with the war waged by the Talibans, he ends up concocting a story that is half-baked, and riddled with glaring flaws and discrepancies. And, barring seasoned actors Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, the star cast (including the protagonist) has failed to deliver believable performances. In fact, Reem’s version of Malala neither renders a cathartic experience for its viewers, nor does it evoke any sense of real emotions. Also, the background score is a replica of the 80s war films in a not-so-flattering way and the haphazard writing goes on for 132 minutes, making ‘Gul Makai’ a tedious watch. It is quite disappointing that the film does not mention any of the controversies Malala has courted along the way, which is hard to overlook given the fact that the film is biographical in nature. ‘Gul Makai’ could have been a very strong story, but the initial spark fizzles out when translated on screen; the takeaway here is close to nothing.

The rest of the film is one bonkers digression after another, concerning some strange criminal conspiracies and the shadowy motivations of the victim’s assistant Anna Kobayashi (Masami Nagasawa). The Thai action star Tony Jaa makes an appearance for some enjoyable martial arts sequences, and there’s a small role for the veteran Japanese player Tadanobu Asano – who appeared in Takashi Miike’s cult shocker Ichi the Killer – as a police detective. You can’t fault this film for its ambition and its willingness to pull out all the stops in terms of spectacle, especially during a colossal slapstick fight scene at Tokyo airport and zany chaos at Tokyo’s world-famous Shibuya crossing. Bizarrely, after all the knockabout absurdity, the movie climaxes with a melodramatic court scene involving a passionate speech and a sentimental flashback to the culprit’s unhappy childhood. We get a diverting moment when the “locked room” detective-story theories of mystery author John Dickson Carr are given an airing. There’s a puppyish charm here. The release of Detective Chinatown 3 has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

This documentary’s human subjects are young and old. But in intriguing, sometimes unsatisfying ways, it leaves the synthesis to the viewer. It is an experimental film more than it is a state-of-the-nation address, inviting consideration of how each of its successive tableaus — just about the entirety of the movie — came to be created. The director, the veteran Chinese filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai ( “Beijing Bicycle”), shot “Chinese Portrait” over a decade on a combination of film and video. Many scenes consist of a single shot, and the vignettes are generally separated by brief bits of visible film leader. The pieces of dialogue that can be heard go unsubtitled. And while the film depicts a diverse cross-section of Chinese life — from horses grazing in the countryside to a man in a respiratory mask in a smoggy cityscape; from Muslims in prayer to a dimly lit celebration — its primary interest lies in the tension between candid moments and shots that appear artfully composed. This should be a series. I just like how this is made. Has the first trilogies effects and feel. You ever catch your self watching a movie, but instead of enjoying yourself you just scrutinize every part because it sucks, that happens all to often with movies now. Dieser Film ist fast ein Märchen: Er hat süßliche Musik, kitschige Momente, glaubt an die Liebe und an Figuren, die ein Recht auf Glück haben. Zum Beispiel an diese junge Mutter namens Clara, gespielt von Zoe Kazan. Mit ihren beiden Söhnen ist sie aus der amerikanischen Provinz vor ihrem gewalttätigen Ehemann geflohen. New York - eine Stadt der Möglichkeiten In ihrem neuen Film zeigt Regisseurin Scherfig New York als das Versprechen, das die Stadt einmal war und vielleicht immer noch ist. "The Kindness Of Strangers - Kleine Wunder unter Freunden" ist ein Ensemblefilm, der seine Figuren mit zunächst fast unsichtbaren Fäden verbindet. Da ist der aus dem Gefängnis entlassene Marc, der gerade dabei ist, einen Job zu finden, in einem etwas heruntergekommenen, aber sympathischen russischen Restaurant. Da ist die Krankenschwester Alice, gespielt von Andrea Riseborough. Nebenbei leitet sie noch eine Therapiegruppe in einer Sozialeinrichtung und arbeitet in einer Suppenküche für Obdachlose. Kurz, sie ist eines jener aufopferungsvollen, hilfsbereiten Wesen, denen in der Welt selten die gleiche Hilfsbereitschaft entgegenschlägt - und von Seiten der Oberschwester im Krankenhaus noch nicht einmal Respekt oder Freundlichkeit. Überlebenskampf nach der Flucht vor dem Ehemann Clara, die junge vor ihrem Mann geflüchtete Mutter, bleibt das Zentrum von Scherfigs Film. Eine Figur, mit der fast beiläufig die Härte der Stadt New York, der selbstverständliche Überlebenskampf in einer Gesellschaft erzählt wird, aus der man sehr schnell herausfallen kann. Bild vergrößern Marc (Tahar Rahim) wird von Timofey (Bill Nighy) zum Restaurantleiter ernannt. Das Auto, in dem Clara und ihre beiden Söhne übernachten, wird beim Falschparken abgeschleppt und beschlagnahmt. Außerdem ist die kleine Restfamilie pleite. In Hotels sammelt Clara die auf den Boden gestellten Reste der Zimmerbestellungen auf. Sie schleicht sich fürs Häppchenklauen auf einen Empfang des russischen Restaurants, das Marc inzwischen leitet - und fliegt fast auf. Clara und ihre Söhne übernachten in Obdachlosenunterkünften, essen in Suppenküchen, schlagen sich durch, sind immer wieder am Rande der Verzweiflung und manchmal mittendrin. "The Kindness Of Strangers": Verkrachte Existenzen Man könnte sagen, dass Lone Scherfigs Film zum Weihnachtsmärchen taugt. Und dann auch wieder nicht. Er verströmt Optimismus, hat eine Versöhnungsbotschaft und leise rieselnden Schnee aufzuweisen. Aber in diesem Schnee wird fast ein Kind erfrieren. Seine verkrachten Existenzen, seine gestrandeten, leicht neurotischen Loser-Figuren, deren Wege sich mit schöner Schicksalshaftigkeit in dem russischen Restaurant kreuzen, all diese Figuren versuchen zwar, einander Trost zu geben - aber es gelingt nicht immer. So wie beim gemeinsamen Abendessen von Alice und Jeff, dem Faktotum und Türsteher des Restaurants. Eine Filmkritik von Sonja Hartl Der Wert der Freundlichkeit Es ist ein nahezu idyllisches Bild: Clara (Zoe Kazan) liegt mit ihrem Mann im Ehebett, das Licht fällt leicht durch das Fenster. Er hat den Arm um sie gelegt, man sieht den Ehering. Doch schon bei dem ersten Blick in ihr Gesicht ahnt man, dass etwas an dieser friedlichen Idylle nicht stimmt. Leise steht Clara auf, weckt ihre Söhne Anthony (Jack Fulton) und Jude (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) mit den Worten, dass es los gehe. Sie schleichen sich aus dem Haus, man hört ein Auto davonfahren – und sie landen in New York. Um Urlaub zu machen, sagt Clara. Aber etwas an ihrem Gesicht sagt, dass sie nicht vorhat, zurückzukehren und allen Mut zusammen genommen hat für diesen Schritt. In New York ist auch Mark (Tahar Rahim). Mit seinem Anwalt John Peter (Jay Baruchel) sitzt er in einem russischen Restaurant, das dem exzentrischen Timofey (Bill Nighy) gehört – und als er die Rechnung bezahlen will, lernt er dessen Geldgeber kennen. Im Gegensatz zu Timofey versteht Mark etwas von dem Geschäft und bekommt den Job, das Restaurant fortan zu führen. Außerdem begleitet er John Peter zu dessen „Vergebungsgruppe“, die von der Krankenschwester Alice (Andrea Riseborough) geleitet wird. Und dann gibt es noch Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones), der einen Job nach dem anderen verliert – und schließlich in einer Suppenküche landet, in der Alice ebenfalls hilft. Sie sind die Fremden, die in The Kindness of Strangers von Lone Scherfig im Titel stecken – alle lose miteinander verbunden, leben sie in New York und sind im Grunde genommen nette Menschen. Nach und nach begegnen sie einander. Und es sind dann auch diese Fremden, von denen nicht nur Clara Hilfe bekommt, nachdem ihr Schwiegervater (David Dencik) sie abgewiesen hat und sie schließlich nach einiger Zeit auf der Straße gelandet ist. Es sind viele kleine Episoden, die Lone Scherfig hier erzählt – vor allem aber geht es um Clara und ihre Söhne. Es wird schnell klar, dass der Ehemann und Vater gewalttätig ist, jedoch konzentriert sich der Film hier auf die Folgen dieser Gewalt und auf deren Auswirkung. Ein Vorfall wird erzählt, einmal erwähnt Clara, dass auch sie misshandelt wurde – aber als Anthony einmal eine genauere Schilderung gibt, ist sie nicht zu hören. Damit wird nicht dem Täter und der Tat Vorrang eingeräumt, sondern den Folgen für Clara und ihre Kinder. Ihre Furcht vor dem Vater ist stets zu greifen. Als er sie in einer Szene plötzlich aufspürt, verändert sich spürbar die Stimmung. Die Beklemmung, die Angst von Clara und ihren Söhnen überträgt sich körperlich in den Kinosaal, sofern man auch nur einen Funken Empathie in sich trägt. Es ist dieser Handlungsstrang, der in The Kindness of Strangers am meisten überzeugt – großartig getragen von Zoe Kazan. Es ist auch ihm zu verdanken, dass man manche der Gags allein schon als willkommene kurze Erleichterung begrüßt, andere Pointen sind indes sehr scharf und gekonnt gesetzt. Dazu kommt eine überzeugende Kameraarbeit, die die bisweilen allzu penetrante Musik weitgehend vergessen lässt. Dabei findet Sebastian Blenkov Bilder von New York, die gleichermaßen die Intimität und die Größe dieser Stadt fassen, aber auch erkennen lassen, dass es hier nur die Hilfe vom Fremden gibt, wenn man im Elend angekommen ist. Leider wird zum Ende hin die grundlegende Botschaft, dass man doch einfach freundlicher zueinander sein sollte, allzu penetrant wiederholt und einmal sogar ausgesprochen. Das ist schade, gerade bei einem Film, der so wundervolle Bilder für die Einsamkeit findet – insbesondere von Alice, die von Andrea Riseborough mit so viel Stärke und Kühle gespielt wird. Hier hätte sich Lone Scherfig, die ja auch das Drehbuch geschrieben hat, noch mehr auf die Stärke ihrer Inszenierung verlassen können. Lone Scherfigs neuer Film erzählt von vier Menschen in New York, die allesamt die schwerste Krise ihres Lebens durchleiden und die nichts weiter versuchen, den eisigen Winter in der Stadt zu überleben. Der Film wird die Berlinale 2019 eröffnen.
