Les Miserables is a very well crafted movie, with excellent photography and acting, able to keep the narrative tension at good levels all along the story, with a very dramatic ending.
The reason why I left the theatre with somewhat mixed feelings is that, if the movie had the ambition to elevate itself above the pure police procedural and to offer a point of view on an extremely delicate theme like the inflammatory social, racial and religious tensions of the Paris banlieue, well on this level the movie does not deliver. Les Miserables shows more than interprets, it engages the spectator without going under the surface of the issue.
The post credit quote from Victo Hugo ( Remember this, my friends: there are not bad grass or bad men, just bad growers" just reinforced my doubts, as the movie focussed on the bad grass and not at all on the issue of "bad growers.

上次來英國，太匆忙加上另有工作，沒有好好規劃行程，更糟的是後來竟然還 弄丟護照 ，整個遊興遊程都大亂. 這次又到了英國，再進了倫敦，我告訴自己，如果還不看場歌劇，那只能說是愧對自己也愧對家國與整個中華民族……. 這次由於行前就有規劃要在倫敦留宿一夜，所以觀賞歌劇的時段我規劃在星期六下午或晚上，還在台灣時就鎖定要看 歌劇魅影 （ Phantom of the Opera ）這齣非常有名的音樂歌舞劇（Musicals）. 出發前在國內有事先做功課，先上 ticketmaster 了解訂票流程與所需資料；找了 女王殿下劇場 （ Her Majestys Theatre ）的 場地攻略 以及 座位性價比 資料以供選位參考，但藉口總是忙，最後那個完成訂票的動作就是沒有做完. 到了英國，也是忙東忙西，搞到三四天前才又上 ticketmaster 要訂票，這才驚覺，星期六下午的票真的超難訂的，所有熱門歌劇或是音樂劇幾乎全告售罄！當然超紅的歌劇魅影更不用說，連選最貴的票，位置讓系統自動分配，都沒有半張票了.真的是快要哭出來.後來好不容易才訂到一張 full price 的票，是在 皇后劇場 （ Queens Theatre ）上演的 悲慘世界 （ Les Misérables ）音樂歌舞劇.悲慘世界與歌劇魅影並稱為到了倫敦一定要觀賞的兩齣音樂歌劇，雖不是最初的選擇，但應該也不錯了. 因為太晚訂了，我只好買 50 英鎊的票，並且還只能讓系統選位，從圖片中可以看出來，除了票價 50 英鎊之外，還另需酌收服務費和手續費，最後總花費是 54. 75 英鎊，折合台幣約 3500 左右，這價格說實在的，比起在台灣得花七八千買票去 國家劇院 觀賞歌劇魅影要便宜上許多了！想都沒想就 check out 了，因為行程緊湊我也沒辦法負擔當場買票要是沒買到劇沒得看的風險，畢竟週末假期的本地人多遊客也多，能夠這樣我已經很滿足了. 系統分配到的座位是二樓的 DRESS CIRCLE，Row G, Seat 5，根據 ticketmaster 網站上的 Seating Chart 來看應算還好的位子，鬆了口氣.訂完票後只有 E-mail 通知，你必須記好一組 order number，然後在歌劇開演當天到劇場售票處（Box Office）去拿票. 星期六，就是開演當天，我跟 Jason 還有 Lawrence 一起進了倫敦城，早上去 Buckingham Palace，接著到 Trafalgar Square，近中午時開始往中國城走，由 Piccadilly Circus 至 Covent Garden 之間的區域通稱為西區（ West End ），這一區也是倫敦城的劇場街，與紐約的百老匯（Broadway and Theatre District, New York）並駕齊驅，世界的戲劇中心.這一區折扣票亭主要集中在中國城附近，運氣好的話可以買到半價的票（所以很多人也稱這邊為半價票亭）. 但 倫敦劇院協會 官方設立的折扣票亭則是在 Leicester Square 附近，通稱 tkts ，很不巧地由於我當天經過太匆忙，沒拍到照片. 🙁 之後跟 Jason 與 Lawrence 在中國城一起吃完午餐後分開，他們去逛別處並準備回 Cambridge，我則往 Queens Theatre 過去，才一轉上 Shaftesbury Avenue 往左邊一看就看到劇場即坐落在不遠的轉角處啦，我還以為有段距離呢，早知道中餐就不用吃那麼趕. 雖然我早到了半小時，不過還是已經有不少人開始聚集在劇場門口，我拍完照片後趕緊到 Box Office 去排隊，由於已經事先訂好票，只要告知 order number 後就可以取到票了，先進劇場裡休息一下，撕折角後依指示上二樓，靠著街道那側有個交誼廳供來賓休息，第一次進倫敦的劇場，我便小心翼翼乖一點，相機不敢亂拍，隨著來賓跟著排隊等入場.劇廳門口會有侍者檢查門票並兜售節目表，一份 3 英鎊. 進了劇院廳中，找到位子坐下，嗯，可以俯視到整個舞台，等一下前面不要坐個 190+ 的高個兒就絕對沒問題，心情大好不少.然後看到前面有媽媽拿出即可拍幫可愛女兒拍照（當然此時是開演前），閃光燈猛閃，我當下也把相機拿出來拍但不打開閃光燈，靜靜地拍著. 劇場的設置也很貼心，樓上的座位椅背上每隔三張就會掛有一副望遠鏡，要使用需要投幣，一次 30 pence，讓你可以像中古世紀坐在花園裡的貴族淑女拿著小望遠鏡看表演（好像茶花女）.（後來開演後我發現旁邊很皮的年輕外國男生好像沒投錢也可以把他前面的望遠鏡拿起來用耶！可能是壞掉了吧…）位子配置其實都有考慮到外國人的身高，所以前面坐的人不要說真的很高的話，都一定不會擋到你的視線. 隨著開演時間越來越近，座位越坐越滿，談話聲音也充滿了整個劇場，基本上跟我們台灣人看電影沒兩樣，甚至更吵，因為他們也都是闔家大小全部一起帶來看的，小孩子應該只有小學吧，就懂著乖乖聽爸媽的話坐下欣賞這樣水準的音樂歌舞劇，你說這樣的教化力有多強呢. 開演前一樣會有廣播請大家關掉手機，剎時突然大家都靜了下來，音樂開始響起…. 接著下來是整個滿滿的感動，我的眼睛與耳朵窮於應付舞台上發生的一切，音樂對話演員的肢體動作歌唱和舞蹈燈光機關道具，簡直是目不暇給，在外面街道上遊覽，不時要用英文發問的當下還覺得自己的英聽不算太差，但是在舞台前，一點都派不上用場，我大概只聽懂 20% 或是更少吧（說得快就跟不上了，何況是用唱的），事前沒有準備好對 Les Misérables 的了解（本來是要看 Phantom of the Opera 的～），故事發生的時空背景，主角人物的關係性格等等，都一無所知.這是我這次看劇最遺憾的一點. 最意外的是，我竟然流了淚.因為那個 Fantine 實在太可憐了嘛… 那種氣氛的營造，整個劇廳都暗下，僅場中一盞特亮的光束直直落在躺床上的 Fantine，她將女兒 Cosette 託付給 Valjean 之後離開人世.就好似她就會這麼樣乘著這道光束去了天堂似的，伴隨著哀傷的音樂，催人掉淚，我隱約聽到鄰近也有人在低聲啜泣.真的，我只能說不愧總聽到有人說一定要來看悲慘世界然後給他好好哭一場，沒有親臨現場你沒辦法體會那種感動的. 後續第二幕第三幕都有許多片段很感人，雖說是齣描述「悲」的故事，但裡頭也加入了三角愛情，戰亂憾人等的素，其實可以算是部呈現 Victor Hugo 生長背景與生命經歷的作品.礙於不是有深刻了解，我在此就不多作介紹與說明. 整齣音樂劇總長 3 小時，含 15 分鐘的中場休息時間.中場休息時間大家都起來舒展四肢，這時候我發現了一個很特別的服務，也就是在劇場的二樓右側，有在販賣 Häagen-Dazs 耶！ 因為很多來欣賞歌劇的都是家長帶小孩闔家大小一起來，所以冰品的生意特別好，沒一會兒就賣光光了！在我左前方就是一整家人都在吃小杯的 Häagen-Dazs ，實在是香死人不償命啊～ 拍完後我也到劇廳外面走走散散步，整個交誼廳坐滿人，喝著茶或聊著天，英國人的休閒社交場合，我完全無法介入，就在一旁靜靜地觀察，也不敢拍照.很多人此時下樓買紀念品（T-shirt, Mug, poster, books or postcard…）或是寫明信片.我也在此時買了本節目表內含簡單劇作者和劇情簡介，好在中場時間趕緊抱抱佛腳. 第二段很快就繼續開演了，後段劇情更是慷慨激昂，但別以為戰爭的慘烈與命運的悲情總是第二段劇的主角，裡頭也參雜了例如 Thenardier 和 Mme Thenardier 的耍寶和在 Cosette 婚禮上的胡鬧等趣味片段，也因為 Thenardier 夫婦的情報販賣，Marius 才知道 Valjean 是他的救命恩人，急忙和 Cosette 趕去找他. 然而，此時 Valjean 已風燭殘年，即將死去，只剩下整齣故事最開始就出現的那一對銀燭台陪伴著他，兩個年輕人在微光中的床畔知曉了自己的身世.Valjean 終於走了，他的靈魂和 FantineEponine和所有在革命中死去的人相聚，庇佑著這一對戀人，迎向光明的未來……. 珍貴的男兒淚就這樣給他毫無阻礙地在臉上狠狠地流了三次.實在太感人，真的. 步出 Queens Theatre ，走往 SHERLOCK HOLMES 酒館 的路上，仍難掩心情激動，這次倫敦之旅至此，已不虛此行了. 歷史上的今天 新年新氣象 - 2012 打進 Vodafone 宏達電報喜 - 2009 選擇的智慧 - 2007 HACKS - 2007 聖誕趴 - 2007 Happy New Year - 2007 再論香雞排 - 2002 About mtlin I'm easygoing and sometimes sentimental, also can be very funny. 《悲慘世界》本是個相當長的小說，雖然是世界名著但有全部看完並能掌握內容的讀者畢竟不多.反而是法國音樂劇作曲家克勞德 - 米歇爾 勳伯格（ Claude-Michel Schönberg ）和阿蘭 鮑伯利（ Alain Boublil ）共同改編成音樂劇後使故事更簡化流暢許多，也藉著百老匯的音樂劇表演因而感動了全世界.所以這裡我會以音樂劇的劇情作介紹，並穿插一些重要的歌曲連結來讓各位朋友可以一起享受. 參考 《悲慘世界》簡介( 一) ── 電影音樂劇) 基本上，我個人認為《悲慘世界》本身作為十九世紀浪漫主義的代表作，在改編成這部電影後不但仍保有細膩的歷史質感（長度）與豐富的人物角色（廣度），更有第一流的音樂與歌曲來刻劃出內心的情感（深度）與音樂劇所達不到的完整視覺表現(亮度. 單純以電影來看，也許此片仍有場景轉換上一點小瑕疵，但能在這四種向度都有這般精彩呈現的重量級作品在歷史上應該也算是稀少了，很值得我們再三品味. 參考 ： 《悲慘世界》簡介( 二) ── 作者與其時代背景) 故事的開頭音樂是一段氣勢壯闊的 Look down ，描寫主角尚萬強（ Jean Valjean ）在監獄中艱辛的生活並與典獄長賈維（ Javert ）在怒氣中對唱，展現出兩人那堅毅不妥協的個性並為後來交織的人生際遇打開序幕.原來，尚萬強在曾因偷了一塊麵包而被判刑，坐牢 19 年才得到假釋.但因為帶有前科並需要到各處的警局報到，討生活處處碰壁，直到被好心的米里哀主教收留，不僅讓他進入教堂取暖，並且提供食物與休息之所. The Confrontation 電影原聲 The Confrontation 歌詞 尚萬強躲開賈維後，到接受芳婷托養珂賽特的德納第 ( Thenardier) 夫婦家，將珂賽特贖出.原來這對開酒店的夫婦疼愛親生女兒，卻常虐待珂賽特（又編造謊言向其母芳婷所取更多的生活費）.珂賽特出場時唱了一首 Castle On A Cloud ， 表達一個受苦中的孩子最天真的想像與期盼，就是可以有人愛她.她的聲音並非如大人般滑完美，彷彿是練過的，而是如一般孩子班的天籟清純，雖然好聽，但聽了真是令人心碎. Castle On A Cloud 電影原聲 Castle On A Cloud 歌詞 德納第夫婦不但讓珂賽特有做不完的苦工，也趁機假借疼惜珂賽特而向尚萬強海削一筆.德納第夫婦在本劇的主要演員中算是唯一的小人，搭配典型的中下階級人物的服裝，雖然貪財自私卑鄙但劇中的表演倒也十分逗趣，與整個戲劇一堆「嚴肅」角色相比反而有其特別的調味效果，並且在後來故事發展中的關鍵時刻無心插柳地地連接起不同人物的故事.在電影與音樂劇中介紹他們酒店的音樂， Master of the House ，不但輕鬆幽默，也寫盡當時社會人心的險惡功利. Master of the House 電影原聲 Master of the House 歌詞 尚萬強收養了珂賽特後，才突然發現，過去近三十年孓然一身的他突然有了一個女兒，這樣的相信他並倚靠他，讓他覺得生命突然有個完全不一樣的意義，與他以前只知道努力工作並向人證明自己的價值完全不同.這時他在暗夜裡唱出 Suddenly 一曲.這是《悲慘世界》原作詞作曲者為這部電影新寫的一首歌，讓尚萬強的內心情感轉折有更好的交代.其中「 Suddenly I see/what I could not see/Something suddenly/Has begun 」一句真是令人回味感動. Suddenly 電影原聲 Suddenly 歌詞 同時間，忠心執法的警長賈維也在滿天的星光下，站在巴黎聖母院的對面俯瞰整個巴黎市區.向天述說他要將尚萬強逮捕的決心，唱出 Stars. 雖然飾演賈維的羅素克洛（ Russell Crowe ）的歌聲並不具有那麼戲劇性，但是我個人卻覺得這正是適合這個角色的聲音，表現出剛強堅毅正直永不妥協的氣質.有些百老匯的演員唱得太花俏反而使人誤以為他是一個以追趕犯人為樂的惡警官.但其實不是的，他只是法律執行的代表，有缺憾但並非邪惡.這也是符合基督教對律法定罪功用的看法，與本劇的表現一致. Stars 電影原聲 Stars 歌詞 尚萬強為了避免他是通緝犯的身份影響珂賽特的成長，一直向她隱瞞真實的身分，也到處躲藏不想讓人發現.直到 1832 年共和黨人鼓勵年輕學生起義反抗政府之時，已經成為少女的珂賽特愛戀上參與反抗運動的學生，馬里歐（ Marius ）.為了描述這一段愛情，馬里歐在革命軍中聚集地 (ABC Café) 所唱的 Red and black 真是精采絕倫，充分道出一個年輕男子在對愛情的期待與對社會有貢獻的理想間所衝突感情.而馬里歐與珂賽特所對唱的情歌 In my life(A heart full of love) ，雖然可能比不上《歌劇魅影》中的 All I asked of you 那樣令人陶醉，但仍是很棒的作品，也是整個充滿肅殺的時代背景中一道難得的清泉. Black, the color of despair! 其實，在浪漫主義的文學中，用這樣明顯的對比來表達不同的情感衝突不是少見的.但能這樣巧妙的又同時表達革命情操與兒女私情實在很特別，又貫穿在同一首歌中，戲劇效果十足，聽了令人慷慨激昂. 但是整個《悲慘世界》中最感人的愛情恐怕並非是馬里歐與珂賽特所表現，而是來自另一位女配角愛波寧（ Éponine ）.她的父母德納第夫婦就是小時候收留過珂賽特的人，從小與珂賽特一起長大.她後來也加入反抗運動，並且一直暗戀著馬里歐.她明知馬里歐喜歡的是珂賽特，卻願意為了讓他高興而協助尋找珂賽特，甚至幫助他們逃過賈維的搜捕.她所唱出的 On my own 充分表達出一個單戀女子為所愛之人所默默承受的孤獨與哀愁，其中有些地方是邊流淚邊唱，是這部片中最感人的一首歌之一.最後在革命軍的戰爭中，她甚至為馬里歐擋子彈而死. On my own 電影原聲 On my own 歌詞 隨著革命軍力量的日漸增長，故事也逐漸進入高潮.在反抗軍精神領袖，拉馬克將軍，去世出殯的前一天，革命軍計畫次日發動推翻政府的革命運動，但同時附則維持社會秩序的賈維也接獲情報，決定變裝進入革命軍當中破壞其計畫.這時所唱的 One day more 是許多人在不同角度所合唱的曲子，讓最後決戰的氣氛被提升到最高. Do you hear the people sing? 電影原聲 Do you hear the people sing? 歌詞 尚萬強為了不讓珂賽特所愛的馬里歐在反抗運動中身亡，也加入了革命軍的活動並暗地保護馬里歐.尚萬強看著沉睡中的馬里歐，這樣的年輕人竟然選擇放下個人娛樂與大好的前途 ( 馬里歐出身貴族是家) ，願意與百姓站在一起為一個自由均富的理想社會努力，甚至可能犧牲生命而覺得不捨.如果不是尚萬強自己已經老邁，可能也會願意積極加入他們的陣營，如同年輕時那樣反對殘酷的法律與不公平的社會.但他現在人生的目標只有一個，就是保護他所愛的珂賽特，並且希望眼前這個男子可以替他帶給柯賽特下輩子的幸福.所以他對上帝唱出他溫暖感人的祈禱： Bring Him home.
